Announcements
President Mike remarked that this meeting had the potential to be an excellent meeting because he was losing his voice.
He received a letter of correspondence from Lou Ann. She said “Thank you to all” for the Ducky gifts. Baby “Katie” thanks us too.
Marty Hoag spoke about the International Program that is collecting sneakers. It has been a rousing failure. He has only received 12-15 sneakers thus far. Please send in your old sneakers (washed with new laces.)
There will be a District Fundraiser to help offset the costs of the District Conference. It will be held at Lucien’s’ Manor in Berlin on Friday from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets are $50.00 per person. See Mike for tickets.
Keith Petrosky spoke about the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). The invitation goes out to Juniors in high schools that are interested in submitting an application. Call his office for more information and applications.
Joe Delgado and Rob Tola reminded everyone to get sponsors for the Duck Race. Send letters or e-mail potential sponsors. Pre-printed letters are available for your use.
Scott McMahon, President of the Breakfast Club, shared sad news with us. The Breakfast Club currently held on Thursday mornings at Larry’s II would be turning in their Charter to Rotary International. They simply could not sustain their membership. He thanked the Vineland Rotary Lunch group for their support. They will not close the Charities Account at this time because they may use it to help other clubs starting in the area.
President Mike reminded everyone that there are only 5 ½ weeks left for Duck Adoptions. See Betsy Frank for more adoption papers. Duck sales will be promoted at 3rd Friday in Millville. (March 16th) Locations to be announced. Volunteers are needed.
Jay Parks, our resident photographer, gave the “Helping Hand Award” to Bruce Middleton. His selection was based on Bruce’s never tiring dedication to the Rotary. Jay wrote a lovely non-rhyming poem and read it to Bruce. Bruce was presented with a framed collage and the coveted “rubber arm.” Bruce stated that in about 3 months he will get even.
President Mike announced Club Business since it was first Tuesday. The Board of Directors met and approved a motion to make donations in memory of the deceased, as well as starting a perpetual scholarship fund that will include the names of the recipients.
GSE (Group Study Exchange) team from France needs host families. Please see P. Mike if interested
The District Conference will be held in Hershey, Pennsylvania this year. The 1st deadline for room reservations is March 5th. However, there are rooms still available, so it’s not too late to call for reservations.
President Mike announced the slate of officers. Those nominated are: Bill Dudley for President, Betsy Frank for Vice President, Ted Lane for Vice President Elect in charge of Fundraising. A motion was made by Marty Hoag to accept the slate of officers, and Charlie Loyale seconded the motion. All approved and the motion was passed.
Pat shared his weekly joke.
Finemaster
Everyone not wearing his or her Rotary pin was fined $1.00.
Today’s Program
Abbey Bradway gave a wonderful speech on “Rotary as a Family.” Rotary wasn’t a true family until the Rotary allowed women to join. Families can look all kinds of ways. Have you ever heard of a Rotarian having a baby? We are all aware of each other’s presence when we come to the meetings. To make a point, Abbey asked everyone who he or she knew were missing from the meeting. Most members knew who were missing from the meeting. The Rotary dynamics has certainly changed over the years, changing from a business type model to a family model. She is sure Paul Harris would not have anticipated this change. As with many families, the Rotary has had its share of divorces, separations, and unions, people who don’t talk to other people as well. In conclusion, this Rotary Club is a “family”. Think about it!
President Mike announced that there would be a “Reverse Classification Speech.” When a member has been in for a long time, it is helpful for new members that were not present at the time to hear it. Ted Lane presented his classification speech. Dan Leslie sponsored Ted. His classification is advertising. His agency has been around for 25 years but he has been in business longer than that. He has been married for 41 years, has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. He is originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He went to Art school. His father-in-law was a carpenter and together helped build their house here. He joined Rotary because it was a business move. He met many movers and shakers in the community. It was then that he found out there was a lot more to Rotary. He recommended that we all get actively involved in this wonderful club, and he looks forward to getting more involved himself.
