We were entertained today by a substitute joke teller, Jay Parks.
Finemaster
Finemaster Bill started his segment of the program by stating that he didn’t have many fines today, and then continued to prove himself wrong.
Program
Dr David Blom presented an interesting and very informative talk on medical oncology. He gave us some very good news – there has been a decline in recent years of all major forms of cancer. There are several reasons for this:
Better screening
Better surgical techniques
More effective drugs
Targeted Therapy is beginning to replace chemotherapy. This therapy can target specific cancer cells, with minimal side effects. Some cancers can now be cured with 1 pill taken orally per day.
Dr. Blom pointed out that clinical trials are important in development of new drugs. Clinical trials are now being conducted in our area, thanks to local connections to Fox Chase Cancer Center. He encouraged the audience to participate in phase 3 clinical trials if asked to do so.
The best chance of curing cancer is early detection. Early screening is vital, and many people simply avoid routine screening. The incidence of colorectal cancer could be cut in half, by annual examination for blood in the stool for persons over age 50, and periodic colonoscopies. Colonoscopies are needed only once every 10 years, if no polyps have been found.
Cat scans are very effective in early detection of lung cancer. Surgery on lung cancer found early enough is very effective.
