Flag Salute & Prayer
Marty led our singing, Flag Salute and the 4-Way Test. We sang unaccompanied since Ron McMahon is serving out of the country again. Carl gave the blessing.
Guests
Tara Smith from Comcast was the guest of Gail Marino.
Announcements
P. Bill introduced Bruce Middleton who made the daily announcements. Bruce announced the following:
Welcome to Joe Stelweck and Shirley Burke our new members.
Vineland Rotary received second place this year at the Service Club Council dinner last Thursday. We will have to try harder for this coming year!
Jay Parks announced that next week is his gala presentation of the Vineland Rotary year in review. This will be the first year that the show has “real audience participation”. He expects us all to attend! Marty took his picture at the podium, asking Jay to hold still. Jay says Marty will “never make it” as assistant club photographer.
Ted Lane said we have 70+ people signed up for the wine tasting December 7th. He said we need an additional 70 couples to be successful. He encouraged members to invite friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers to insure our success. Ted had posters and more “invitation” tickets for members to sell. Ted will have more available again next week.
Ted asked those providing Silent Auction items to provide:
1. A description of the item for our listing and promotion and
2. A unique way to display the item or gift for the evening
P. Bill announced the District 7640 76’ers game tickets and said sign-up sheets are at each of the tables today. A portion of your ticket price goes to Rotary. We can also save on food at the game by buying food tickets at the time we sign-up for the game.
Bill went on to announce the Tiny Tim Caroling to be held Tuesday night, Dec. 11th. Shirly Burke will co-host the event with the Fosters, so plan for a fun night of fellowship, merriment and singing.
We received letters from students who received dictionaries from the Club. One student thanked us for his “special gift” and said he wants to join the Club when he grows up because the club is “cool”. Got the name, Ken?
Norm Neill will receive an award from Cumberland County College on Thursday, Nov. 29th. Norm will be honored with the “Distinguished Alumni Award”. Congratulations, Norm!
Finemaster
And speaking of distinguished ‘Ol Norm, he was our fine master…and a fine one at that. He fined Joe, Rob and Rush $3 each for arriving late and not seeing him first. Ken paid $2 for skiing out West during the holidays. Abbey and Betsy were each fined $2 for sitting together again and Carl paid $2 for planning to leave early. In honor of Veterans Day, all non-veterans paid a buck.
Program
Betsy introduced today’s program, a tribute to Veteran’s day, with a video of an interview with our own Mary Hoag. She recounted the origination of the holiday, the ending of the “Great War”, World War I, the “war to end all wars”, on 11/11/1918 at 11:00. Armistice Day became a US holiday in 1938, and later became “Veterans Day” in 1954.
The video interview, by a VHS student, was an entertaining and riveting account of one American soldier’s experiences during wartime over 60 years ago. Marty provided a vivid account of military training in America, army food and the irony of the experience. The sights, sounds and smells of the battlefield were unforgettable. Marty eloquently recounted difficult memories with precision as though he had lived the experience yesterday. This was one of those presentations that caught everyone’s attention, one of our very best programs.
