Announcements

Gail said three seats are still available for the Service Club Council Installation dinner, November 8th. See Gail if you are interested in attending.

Ron “Dracula” McMahon said 15 Rotarians participated donating blood last week. The event was very successful, and Rotarians invited family members and co-workers to donate. He thanked four Rotarians who helped in making the blood drive successful. They were Carol Captis for her radio advertising, Linda Foster for her publicity efforts, Jay Parks for his published photos and Sherry and her family for providing a facility for the event without charge. Ron urged members to consider inviting more donors to the next blood drive on 1/8/07.

Kevin Bernhardt said funeral services will be featured on Front Line on PBS channel 12 on Tuesday night. The Finemaster was tuned-in.

Fundraising Chair, Ted Lane said 60 have signed up for the wine tasting on 12/7. The room can hold 200, so we need to invite more to join the fun. There will be a chocolatier, hot and cold buffets, sparkling and dessert wines for the holidays and 60 wines to sample. Invite your friends. The sign-up sheet was circulated at the meeting today.

Linda Foster said we need members to donate gifts for the Silent Auction that will be held during the wine tasting. Use your imagination! Do you have a hobby or professional service you could donate??? How about putting a basket together with a gardening, sports, beach theme?? She said she has letters available for members to request gifts from local businesses for the event. She noted that the massage was donated by Lou T. it is not a “massage by Lou T.” (thank goodness) Ha! See Linda for more information.

Bonnie said we have sold 115 seasonal wreaths today, and she will be ordering 120 (bought in groups of 10), so we still have an extra 5 to sell. See Bonnie if you can sell them.

P. Bill talked Vineland Rotary history and detailed the club’s first District Governor, Harley Gove in 1952.

Finemaster

Bill Plick returned from his vacation and appeared well-rested. He dove into his work and gave P. Bill the option of paying $30 or what was in his wallet for the lack of fines levied in Finemaster Bill’s absence. $2 fines were given to Linda Foster for incorrect birthdates in the newsletter, George Steinbronn for “Y” publicity and Kevin Bernhardt for his shameless promotion of funeral services. Loren was in the paper twice but Bill gave him a special, only $7 for both. (What a deal!) Bonnie’s newspaper article cost her $5.

Program

Program Chair Betsy introduced today’s speaker, Paul Herron, Executive Director of the Bay Atlantic Symphony.
Classical music is a very important part of human history, and has stood the test of time. Paul said most everyone recognizes Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. He then compared it to modern music. Often the difference is “art” vs. “entertainment”. He named several chart-topping popular songs and artists and asked if they would be remembered in 200 years. Classical music is art that is entertainment.

Classical music has been proven to increase school learning, reduce depression and even alleviate symptoms of alzheimers. “Arts means business’, and the local economy will benefits nearly $7 for every $1 invested in the arts. The excitement of the theater will be brought to Landis Avenue with the reopening of the Landis Theater. It will cause a significant change to at least a portion of Landis Avenue.

The Bay Atlantic Symphony is a union organization with a $1/2 million budget. Compared to the Philadelphia Orchestra, its operating expense is far lower. This is reflected in lower ticket prices and the added convenience of our area.

Paul said the leadership of Cumberland County appreciates the value of the arts and has given support. But because budgets have been cut in many school districts, we have lost a generation of children who have not experienced classical music. It is a loss to our society. The Bay Atlantic Symphony is looking for teachers who would like to have their classes attend a symphony as an outreach to local community. Have them contact Paul to make arrangements.

The winner of the money was Dave Schad. A Bay Atlantic Symphony live recorded CD was won by Shirley Burke.
