Program
PE Betsy introduced our guest speaker, Pete Stafford, current chairperson of the Santo Domingo Orphange Project. We are in the top 3 for our district for giving to this project. The Orphanage was established in the mid 1980's. There are approximately 160 orphans there, but it also serves 1600 to 1800 community children with before and after school care, elementary and high school educational services. There are just a handful of Nuns who run the orphanage. It also functions as a community center which provides a medical and dental clinic.
Approximately 60% of the food at the orphange comes from our donations. Through better nutrition, the lives and learning potential of the children is enhanced. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty. Also "boxes of love" have been provided that are shoe size boxes filled with age appropriate toys and items. These boxes are a big hit with the orphans and are among their most prized possessions.
Pete stressed that our clubs participation in their project has been a big part of its success.
