"The AAAP's proposed new Mingo Park Observatory in the south hills will be
designed to support a broad range of educational programs given by our members.
Included in the Observatory will be the club's Viewlex Apollo Planetarium and
ten foot dome. This will allow us to give sky shows, etc., to people either
waiting to view through the telescopes, or on nights when clouds and weather do
not permit other options.
The Observatory is anticipated to house two major telescopes, to be determined.
Currently, we have considered a 16" Ritchey-Chretien Cassegrain and a 10"
Refractor as possible candidates, among others.
The site offers several appealing features including: A covered Pavillion with
electric power, cookout pits and picnic facilities, four restrooms, ample
isolation from local roads and local development, two large parking areas for
public and members, a field for observing and camping, water, and excellent
skies with stars to at least mag 5.5.Following is a timeline of major
events in the Observatory's development from May - August 2002:
May - Hillsite in Mingo Park offered by County as available and suitable
for our needs.
6/20 - First official visit and inspection by Observatory Committee members
