Music has always been a big part of skateboarding. In fact, a lot of skaters need the right music to help them get their rip ride on. Just look at the Muska and his ever present boombox or even the cumbersome headphone skatestyle that some skaters sport. You can probably say the same thing about the relationship between music and any other sport (or at least any "extreme" sport).
The unique thing about skateboarding is that it has been closely associated with punk rock. From the late 70's and through the 80's, plenty of people got into punk music through skating and vice versa. This relationship between the two activities is the subject of an ongoing exhibition at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. In conjunction with this exhibition, the EMP threw an event called "Hey Punk!" over the weekend of August 17-19. This event consisted of appearances by some bands, photographers, a handful of legendary skaters, and a few other notables from the skate scene. Throughout the weekend, the EMP hosted panel discussions, band performances, skating, and a viewing of the poolskating video, "Fruit of the Vine." |
