OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
Unfortunately, in our society, you are what you do. We are identified by our jobs. Consequently, immediately following rehabilitation, we need to find a new identity, a job. For many folks, our previous occupations are out of reach because of our newly acquired limitations. I encourage folks to modify the previous direction. What parts of our first career are still marketable? Personally, after being a corrections agent, I thought about counseling clients who would meet with you voluntarily rather than court ordered. That would be a refreshing change! I returned to Methodist Hospital where volunteers had made a huge difference in my outlook. Once, following a support group that I facilitated, a survivor said, "Thanks for giving us hope." WOW, pretty powerful.
