OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
Stepping out of our comfort zones and taking some risks can put you back in the "main stream". In my first life, canoeing and camping had been a passion. But since my stroke, I had been intimidated to return to the wilderness.
I hooked up with Wilderness Inquiry, also based out of Minnesota. They take groups of people of various capabilities on wilderness adventures. I joined the trip to the Florida Everglades. We canoed through the Everglades down to the Gulf of Mexico, camping on different islands each day of the week. While feeling inadequate because of my previous level of expertise, one of the guides assured me that disability was about attitude and that my attitude would take me far. While riding a swell in the Gulf, and propelling my canoe with a paddle stroke, I smiled and said "I'm back". I had broken the chains and I could live again.
