OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
In rehab as in the real world, your mental focus can make all the difference. It's about attitude, the one thing we really own and control. A common trait among individuals who have recently experienced major trauma, mental or physical, is to become passive and look to others for direction. I encourage folks to get pro-active. Don't whine and complain. Do something about it. Lead for a while.
Personally, I was feeling incarcerated. I was mad as hell and wanted my world back. I was lashing out at those who were helping, a classic transfer of anger. In fact I had a friend tell me about this behavior. After observing me in a room therapy, he said, "Dude, you are being a real prick." I was grateful he had the courage to call me on it. I have since then apologized to all those who had to work with me.
