OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

I am often asked, "Where did you get your motivation, your drive?" Unfortunately, many people rely on others for motivation or a push. I find I get more satisfaction if it's all me. While in a residential rehab center, a staff member (from British Guyana) said, "Counselor (he knew of my previous profession), you have the heart of a lion." He had observed me in my routine. While other residents would "veg out" during their free time in front of a TV or on the phone, I would pace the hallways and climb stairs. I knew a stationary lifestyle would not improve my strength, and I had parked my wheelchair permanently. I would also ride a stationary bike for 1/2 hour daily. Another resident thought I was being punished on the bike. On the contrary, I had a goal to walk again and I was going for it.
