My father, Tony Iannantuono was on the origianl shake down cruise. There is a book that was made of the ship. He is interested in getting a copy. He enjoyed his stay on board. 60 yrs later his memories are still vivid and he has great pride in having served on her.

Served onboard from Dec 56 to Oct 58 (Decommissioning). That was a sad day for me because I loved being assigned to her and enjoyed the officers and crew I served with. Great job on keeping Roanoke a float.

I'm a native of Roanoke, VA for which your ship was named and am a Navy vet having served aboard the heavy cruiser USS Newport News CA-148 including a tour in Viet Nam. Visit the web site for USS Newport News. I also have a photo of the Newport News and Roanoke side by side in port.
