Here's a view of my car "before" installation of the euro A-pillar fairings.
One thing you can notice is that I've removed the corroded metal-plastic insert. I replaced it with black 12 gauge wire in the groove which expands out the rubber while giving the "euro look" of just simple black rubber without the chrome. Also on the side window rubber I replaced the chrome-strip style window rubber with the black rubber style.
To match the car, I also re-finished the paint-chipped rear-view mirrors in sunbrite yellow to match the car.
Here's the A-pillar fairing being installed on passenger side...
I first used a mild solvent to remove any residue from the paint and to thoroughly clean under the rubber window moulding lip. Then you weeny the black plastic piece behind the rubber lip and in between the drip rail. After that I pulled out the cellophane from underneath thus exposing the adhesive, securing the little spoiler. This will only fit on US models up through '82 because in '83 VW went to the urethane-bonded style windshield.
The piece fits just like you would expect from an OEM part! (This fairing is stock Volkswagen on german GTI's and GTD's, as well as on an off model called the "Formel 'E' Golf" which is a rare economy golf.) The fairing is quoted in the Autotech catalog to reduce cd (coeffecient of drag) by up to 10%. Should increase mileage and also add a little top end speed as well as highway acceleration.
