Ahh... this "020" type FF tranny is finally looking clean... The tranny took about a half gallon of gasoline, a few cans of brake parts cleaner, and several rolls of paper towels. Loads o' fun. Good for the skin, too. But in the end it'll be worth it.
You might notice the end of the tranny is opened up... This is how you can get to the clutch throwout bearing, which is a good idea to change when servicing your tranny. It's good to also check your clutch push-rod, which runs lengthwise through the tranny through the hollow mainshaft. I noticed upon inspection my push-rod was in a sorry state. It was pretty wasted... it had pitting and brass/bronze bushing material which had been braized on to it (not good.) This material was on BOTH ends of the shaft, so someone at one time flipped over the thing without replacing the bushing (stupid!) Also not to mention evidence that someone tried to grind on it right where the oil seal is!
After tapping out the bushing, the reason for the failiure became evident - it was deformed as if someone had hammered it in with a screwdriver! So I ended up just replacing the whole rod, the throw-out bearing, the bushing, and a few oil seals just for peace of mind.
I guess I'm not going back to the place that I had replace my clutch last! Do it yourself and you can learn something new and have a better chance of getting it right. :-)
