At the end of the program, they promised to play a montage that included short, five-second bits of every number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, in order from 1956 to 1981. I was lucky enough to drop a cassette tape in the recorder and record the montage. It took 38 minutes.
Well, I listened to that tape semi-regularly for six years. I finally put it away in 1988 or so, thinking that someone really ought to update it. I had some of the new number one songs, but not all of them. Plus, I did not have a mixing studio at my fingertips.
Time went by. Soon enough, mixing studio software became available for the PC for less than $50. I dug out my tape and digitized it. I browsed my collection and was able to extend the montage out to include every number one song up to the end of 2003.
I also dug up a list of all #1 songs from 1940-1955 and added those songs to the front montage (although I am missing 3 songs for those 15 years).
The montage is now more than 100 minutes long and fits onto two CDs.
It is quite impressive to listen to. You can hear the musical styles shift and change as each year rolls by in under 2 minutes each.
Since then, I have created many more montages and CDs spotlighting, for example, all the #2 hit songs, all charted songs from 1977 and so on. Above is the current list of the montage CDs I have created. I can sell copies of them for $6 each (plus $2 shipping total). Send me email and tell me what you want.
And, maybe, if you are lucky, you can search Kazaa space for the phrases "Timesweep" or "DJ Bing" and find some of the montages as MP3 files.
