Getting started

If you're ready to get started flying, outstanding.

Here's what you should do:

Find an instructor

Obviously, I hope you'll talk to me and we'll start flying together either in your airplane, through the Yankee Flying Club or through one of the FBOs at a convenient airport in the Twin Cities area. I'd be happy to meet you for coffee to discuss your training or give you a tour of the Yankee Flying Club airplanes.

If you like to shop around a bit, good. I'm a member of the National Association of Flight Instructors, which maintains a listing of instructors nationwide at http://www.nafinet.org/directory/flight_lookup.html.

I'd also highly recommend checking out the Aircraft Owner and Pilot's Association Learn to Fly resources at http://www.aopa.org/learntofly/ . You can also sign up for a free six-month trial subscription to their excellent Flight Training magazine. If you join the AOPA, their monthly AOPA Pilot magazine is worth the membership fee alone.

Once you've hooked up with an instructor you're ready to start taking lessons, and the real fun begins.

Your first lesson will likely be a low-key affair, starting with an introduction to the airplane. You'll get to fly the airplane and spend about an hour just getting used to the feel of the controls.

If you fly with me, our first lesson together will include a fair bit of talking about what we're going to do ahead of time, followed by a flight to a nearby airport where we'll land, grab a soda and talk some more. You'll do most of the flying, or at least as much as you're comfortable with, and I'll do everything possible to make it a fun and relaxed experience.

We'll probably fly early in the morning or in the evening, when the air is generally calm and the light beautiful. There's a near-magical quality to flying early in the day and I think you'll enjoy it.
