Note: The following applies to those Windows Operating Systems that have a convenient means for operating DOS programs under Windows DOS and true MS-DOS, such as Windows 98. Some later Windows Operating Systems, such as Windows XP do not provide such convenience. Those who install version mill04a of "The Mill" will fiind more information on this subject in the notes contained on the download page and also in notes provided during the installation. Last revised 30 April 05How to create a shortcut
for running "The Mill" in a DOS Window
or under MS-DOS
You must run "The Mill " under MS-DOS in order for the serial port output to be available. The serial port output can be used for driving a sounder, for keying a transceiver, or for operating a keying relay. A keying relay can be used to key a Dial-up Morse system, a transceiver, or an audio oscillator (code practice oscillator) if your computer does not support the PC speaker or provide a patch to the soundboard. If the serial port output is not needed, it is convenient to run the "The Mill" in a DOS Window. If you sometimes use the serial port, you should create both shortcuts.
It is suggested that you print this page so that you will have it before you when you create the shortcut.
