WEST WHITE PINE LOOKOUT RESTORATION AND INTERPRETIVE PROJECT
The Amateur Radio Forest Fire Lookout Tower Assocition in cooperation with the Colorado State University-Environmental Learning Center are developing plans to rehabilitate the West White Pine Lookout Tower cab. The Environmental Learning Center provides a unique setting in which to preserve and educate the public about the nations lookout towers heritage and amateur radio fire line communication development history. The project will be funded and completed through grants and volunteer programs through Colorado State University, United States Forest Service, Amateur Radio Forest Fire Lookout Tower Association and the Forest Fire Lookout Tower Association. We are currently working on obtaining grants for materials through HOME DEPOT, and Youth at Risk Programs for the rehabilitation work force. Graduate students are being recruited to research the history of Forest Fire Lookout Towers along the Colorado and Wyoming Front Range and to provide a historical intrepretive program at the Envirnomental Learning Center lookout location.
