A Bit About Us...The Wabash Railroad Historical Society is a not-for-profit, IRS tax-exempt organization dedicated to the collection and preservation of historical artifacts, data, photos, and drawings on the history, operation and equipment of the Wabash Railroad Company, its predecessors and affiliates -- including the Ann Arbor Railroad Company (until 1963), the New Jersey, Indiana & Illinois Railroad Company, the Lake Erie & Ft. Wayne Railroad Company, and the Manistique & Lake Superior Railroad Company. The society was established in 1975 and it was incorporated in the State of Missouri in 1989.The WRHS communicates with its members through its publications. The Banner, which is named after the Wabash Railroad publication of the same name, contains feature-length articles and photographs, and is published two or three times a year. While these articles vary greatly in subject matter, they all pertain to the Wabash Railroad and/or its affiliates. Past article subjects have included:
Each year the WRHS sponsors an Annual Meeting at different locations somewhere in former Wabash territory. WRHS members gather to catch up on old times, trade Wabash history, hear guest speakers, show off their modeling prowess and to share a banquet meal together. Past meetings have been at Monticello, IL, Chicago, IL, St. Louis, MO, Decatur, IL, Moberly, MO, Lafayette, IN, and Toledo, OH. Occasionally the Annual Meeting is held jointly with other railroad preservation societies. The WRHS also owns a restored caboose, Wabash #2834 which resides at the Monticello Railway Museum. We regularly schedule caboose work session in April. Membership dues are currently $25.00/yr for a regular membership, $30.00/yr for a sustaining membership, and $35.00/yr for outside the USA and Canada. The membership year runs from January 1 to December 31. Each new member will receive all the available publications for the membership year in which he or she joins. A Note to persons searching for Wabash Employee Records...The WRHS does not have any ex-Wabash Railroad personnel records in it's archives...so please do not contact us asking for them as those records are most likely lost. The Norfolk Southern RR (the present day parent to the Wabash RR) has indicated that they do not have employment records for its some 300 predecessor lines. They recommended the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, which you can contact at 844 North Rush, Chicago, IL 60611 (312) 751-4500. They also have a Web page at The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. Be advised that their records only go back to about 1935. Another source is the United Transportation Union. Their telephone number in Cleveland, OH is (216) 228-0411. Their records go back to about 1900. The employee would have had to have been a union member, but since the UTU now combines most of the old unions, it's just only one source.
