House on the Red Sea

Ellen Liberatori

The house in Ain Soknah
stands in relief
along the Red Sea

I am its eternal guest
its resident poet
its lightkeeper
and watchman
in a gallery of modern art

Most days I am its maid and servant
tidying all ten rooms
just to see the blue color
a theme that connects Egypt's most brilliant
but unsung painters

For most patrons
the sea would be the masterpiece
that would capture their endless gaze

I am the housekeeper
drawn to the mystery
of the glowing blue jars
who can't stop herself from touching them
who knows there is wonder
true discovery
each holding an element of brilliance
an element of tomorrow
