POETRY

The Writer's Almanac

Nisha Susan

Everyone knows someone who told them

that they should write about food instead

and never write about round boy buttocks again.

Or only write about round boy buttocks

but not if you are a girl,

but wait, not if you are a boy.

At least don't make the buttocks brown.

But it's strange that you write about white ones.

Why don't you write about pain instead?

And about how she cried and how he fled

the border, his mother and boredom in bed.

Everyone knows someone

who knows.

But no one knows

that you don't know

why you write about round boy buttocks

and that you worry

whether the words are round enough or

brown enough.
