READING

JR, by William Gaddis - Annotations

Our favorite novel, of any century.

Emdashes - Featuring Reviews of New Yorker fiction by the Editor of The King's English

Check out this New Yorker magazine fansite for all things New Yorker. Comprehensive coverage of the magazine since its founding in 1926, and a regular column from Benjamin Chambers, editor of The King's English, in which he reviews New Yorker fiction old and new.

Samuel Pepys' Diary (Daily)

A strikingly modern-minded man from the 16th century.

George Orwell's Library

A Russian site honoring Orwell.  Entire novels, essays, reviews, and a brief bio available online (in English & Russian) We're not sure it's legal, but we like it.

WRITING AND Publishing

Duotrope's Digest: search for short
fiction & poetry markets

For writers:  a free online database of publishing markets. Searchable, up-to-date, and free (donations are encouraged). It may eventually become available only by subscription, but even if it does, it'll be worth it.

Council on Literary Magazines & Publishers (CLMP)

For writers: publisher of a famous directory of literary magazines and markets; also has information on jobs in publishing.

For literary publishers:  a treasure-trove of technical assistance information on production, distribution, fundraising and publicity.

New Pages - Independent Presses, etc.

For writers and readers: an excellent guide to independent presses, bookstores, and (amazingly!) reviews of recent issues of small literary journals. Also, links to other online literary journals like The King's English, and updates on new writing.
