Model Airplane Remote Control

Updated: 02/24/2008

 How much does it Cost?

Like most Hobbies, there is some initial cost associated with start up.  First, you need an airplane ($100), a radio ($150), an engine ($70), and some field equipment ($50).  The average start up cost is about $300 to $400.  This can vary depending on where you get your equipment.  A local Hobby store can get you set up with a trainer, radio and the necessary equipment.  It is best to ask an instructor to help you pick the correct equipment for your goals.  Mail order, go to a Swap Meet, or if you are lucky, find someone getting out of the hobby is also a good source.  It is highly recommended when getting into the hobby is to join AMA and a club.  This can cost from $75 to $150 per year.

How do I get started?

Once you have your airplane and equipment it is necessary to learn how to fly.  All R/C hobby clubs will have instructors, and can provide you with information to learn how to fly safely and within the limits of the airplane and the rules of the local flying club.

How long does it take to fly?

It takes time to learn how to fly, and plenty of practice.  Some people will catch on in a few weeks, for others it takes much longer.  Once the art is mastered, it is as easy as riding a bicycle.  It does take practice and more practice.  A good instructor is the quickest way to master the art and save your plane from crashing.

“Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man:  Landing is the first.”

How fast can a model go?

The typical trainer will fly in the neighborhood of 25 to 50 mph with a landing speed around 15 to 25 mph.  Specialty built models can be made to fly so slow that in a slight breeze they go backwards.  On the other hand, pylon racers and fanjets can reach speeds of 150 mph or greater.

How far can a model fly?

Most radios today have a range of about 1/4 to 1/2 mile when controlling an airplane, however, a model with a 6-foot wingspan will look small at 1/2 mile or even a 1/4 mile.  If you can still see what the plane is doing you probably still have control of it.

How old should I be to fly?

The sport is enjoyed by young and old alike.  It is most important to operate the equipment safely and have respect for others.  Almost any youngster who has developed the proper coordination can be taught to fly, however, with cost and safety considerations at hand, supervision is strongly recommended.
