The Black Hills has been termed an "Island in the Plains." As can be seen by the Landsat photo below, this is certainly the case. The human occupation goes back at least 10,000 years. The archeological sites, recreation activities, timber sales, cattle production and the Native American activities all must be managed by the Forest Service.
