The Building Process |
Saturday was spent creating patterns and marking the layout of pieces inside the boat. Cutting almost seventy 1/2 by 3/4 by 3 inch spacer blocks to be installed under the inwale took a bit of time, of course all had to be sanded and shaped. Then the outline was transfered from the pattern to the frame stock and the first frame was cut. Each frame is custom fit to it's location on the hull. The location of the seats and oarlocks was determined and marked on masking tape attached to the hull. Then the location of the spacer blocks laid out in respect to the breasthook, oarlocks and quarter knees. |

The floors and frames have been clamped in position. |

Spent some time trying different design layouts for the breasthook, think I settled on one I can live with using strips of Spruce and Meranti. Made a simple jig for the band saw using the fence and a plastic triangle to cut the 3 inch spacer blocks that go under the inwales. Then made another jig to sand them all on the disc sander. After all the ends were sanded, I smoothed over the top edge to remove the sharp corner. |

I started trying to decide on a design for the breasthook. |
Used a large plastic triangle as an aid to cut spacer blocks |

Then sanded the ends smooth and rounded the top edge of each |
55 blocks so far........ |
|
By the end of the day I was ready to get some things glued up, so I proceded with the floors at the foreward and aft seat positions. The Center seat floor piece will be installed when these two have dried because didn't have enough clamps to do all three at once. |

|
Workspace between boat and tools, the pipe clamps are holding the top support for glueing in the floors. |
After these dry, the center seat floor piece will be glued in. |
|
The frame pieces that create the points to attach the seats have been roughed out on the band saw and still need final shaping and fitting. The length of each is custom fit to the underside of the inwales then attached with screws to the inwale and through nailed at the lap of each side plank. |
