Bowron Provincial Park Canoe Circuit

This trip took place the second week in September of 2005.
Both of us had moderate flat water canoe/kayak experience and were able to do the circuit in 7 days.
We arrived for our mandatory orientation by the BC Parks Personnel and weight-in of the gear to be carried
in the canoe when portaging, which is limited to 60 lbs.
The trip began close to 10 AM with a 2.4 km hike to Kibbee Lake with an elevation gain around 200 feet.
This is the hardest portage on the circuit.
The next Portage between Kibbee Lake and Indianpoint Lake is a good second hardest.
By the time we paddled Indianpoint Lake and did the portage to Isaac Lake, we had enough for one day
and decide to make camp 10 our stop for the night.
The next day we enjoyed the view as we paddled to Wolverine Bay to do some fishing. Stopped at the Wolverine Bay Patrol Cabin to stretch, have a snack and look around.
Shortly after leaving the bay we were caught without our rain gear and got damp enough to warrant a stop at camp 18 for a change of clothes and dry out. Needless to say we paddled with our rain pants on and the coat handy, the rest of the trip.
It continued to rain that afternoon and we stopped for the night at camp 20 which also had a cabin for drying out. We hung up most of our gear on the nails in the cabin roof beams and kept the fire going while we had dinner and looked around a little. We opted to make our beds on the floor because the springs on the bunk beds had seen too many winters to be comfortable.
The morning promised fair weather and by mid-morning there were patches of blue sky and sunlit hillsides with fresh snow on the peaks.
We paddled to the end of Isaac Lake and shared group camp 28 with a group of eight that had started a day before us.
The next day began with a portage beside the Isaac River to McLeary Lake. The Cariboo River kept us busy watching for sweepers and deadheads, and we were treated to a Moose Cow and Calf at the water's edge as we rounded a curve in the river. The air was noticeably cooler while traversing the Cariboo River.
We took a break from the rain at camp 34 for a hot lunch and hot drink and then continued on to camp 37 for the night. The weather cleared to become a beautiful and pleasant afternoon and evening.
The next day we took a side trip to Unna Lake and a short hike to Cariboo Falls through a forest of Lodge Pole Pine with thick moss covering the ground and enough Blue Berry bushes for snacking.
That afternoon we made the Portage to Babcock Lake then Skoi Lake then the last Portage of the trip into Spectacle Lake and stopped for the night at camp 45.
We fished and enjoyed a warm sunny afternoon on Spectacle Lake while we headed toward camp 53, on the Bowron River for our last night on the circuit.
The next day we wound our way down Bowron River to Bowron Lake and benefited from the wind at our backs the length of the lake as we paddled to Becker's Landing.

The map on the next page was provided by the Park Department at orientation and was used throughout the trip.
