About the League

Our mission, our structure, our history, what we stand for and our priorities...

Greetings from the LWV-WC, MAL Unit, Chair

Welcome to the LWV-WC website. The League is a non-partisan, non-profit, membership organization that encourages informed and active participation in public policy concerns.  The League never endorses candidates or political parties, but seeks to inform our members and the public about issues in the public realm.

We invite you to join us. The League of Women Voters is a three tiered organization.  When you join locally, you automatically become a member of the state and national League of Women Voters.  For more information on membership, look under the tab “Join”.

Our website provides many useful links to all levels of government and various agencies to help you find the information you need.

The League provides non-partisan voter guides, candidate and issue forums, legislative directories, information about voting laws, and studies about public issues.

The LWV-WC advocates positions on selected issues after careful study and membership input.  These carefully determined positions on issues are utilized as a basis for communication with public officials at all levels of government.

We are a grassroots organization.  We provide a place to learn and improve leadership skills.  We provide a place to discuss important issues impacting our lives.

Democracy is a wonderful form of government, but it has one major problem—democracy ONLY works if WE participate in an informed manner.

We welcome you to join us, female or male, as we seek to make our government more transparent and effective.

Jane Ratcliff Hill, Ph.D.
Chair, LWV of Washington County, MAL Unit

Our Mission and Roles

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate.

The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.

  • Voters Service/Citizen Education: we present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.
  • Action/Advocacy: we are nonpartisan, and, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest.

To conduct our voter service and citizen education activities, we use funds from the League of Women Voters of Virginia Education Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization. The League of Women Voters, a membership organization, conducts action and advocacy and is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) corporation.

Our Vision, Beliefs, and Intentions guide our activities.---------------------
