Title: "New Hampshire Printmaking Project"
About the Artist

William Mitchell is a state-juried printmaker in the League of New Hampshire Craftsman. Mitchell’s artwork is known throughout the state of New Hampshire. Mitchell’s brightly colored serigraph prints (commonly known as silkscreens) depict images of New Hampshire’s natural beauty. Mitchell is recognized as a master printmaker with over 25 years of experience. He has conducted numerous printmaking workshops for young people through the League of NH Craftsman.

The Proposal
The artist will transform the school’s art room into an exciting printmaking studio. Art classes and groups of students will come to the studio to investigate several traditional printmaking techniques designed for each grade level.
Sixth grade- Block prints: soft linoleum and foam plates
Seventh grade- Monoprints: watercolor monoprints and crayan d’arche methods
Eighth grade- Silkscreen: paper stencils, drawn glue stencils and other stencil processes
Students will create works of art to comply with New Hampshire curriculum standard #4:"analyzing the visual arts in relation to New Hampshire history and culture." The student created prints will describe the history, culture, people and resources specific to New Hampshire. English, history, math and science teachers can also participate in this project by encouraging students to contribute stories, poems, profiles and other writings. These writings will be printed on 8.5" x11" paper and will be hand-bound with the student artwork to create three final portfolios or books. These illustrated books, detailing student ideas and images about the state of New Hampshire, will become part of the permanent collection of the school library. A culminating art show and open house will be planned at the end of the residence to spotlight individual student efforts.

Objectives:
Participating students will learn a variety of media, techniques, and processes used in printmaking. Different printmaking processes will be utilized to create and express individual designs and ideas. The artworks created will emphasize and examine student ideas about New Hampshire’s places, people, and history. Students will explore the different cultural and historical backgrounds of discussed printmaking techniques. The relationship of these printmaking techniques relating to careers and fields will be discussed. These will include printmaking in fashion, manufacturing, and advertising. The visual elements of color, design, shape, form, space, value, line and texture will be explored in the prints created. The concepts of quality craftsmanship in producing multiple artworks will be introduced.
