Herbal remedies for nausea and vomiting are many and varied.  One of the simplest remedies is a tea that is prepared by itself or in combination with another her

Lemon Balm

Chamomile

Meadowsweet

Spearmint

Peppermint

Ginger

Cinnamon

May be frozen into ice cubes and sucked, to decrease nausea.

Slippery elm tablets can be chewed or sucked also.

Supplements of Vitamin B6 (25 mg) with zinc (15 mg), and magnesium (500 mg) have also helped.

HEARTBURN

This is the name for the unpleasant sensations of burning, heat and pain in the food tube above the stomach (the esophagus).

It may be caused by nervous tension, excess production of stomach acids, relaxed stomach muscles which allow foods to back up, or the displacement of the stomach by the upward movement of the enlarging uterus.

Sip slowly and frequently teas of any of the following herbs to help prevent and treat heartburn:

Chamomile

Fennel

Dandelion root

Lemon Balm

Meadowsweet

Peppermint

Ginger

Iceland Moss

Slippery Elm: in powdered form, mixed with a little water, or cool chamomile tea flavored with honey or cinnamon may be used.  Slippery elm may also be taken in the form of tablets.  Throat lozenges are also available.

Papaya in any form -- fresh, dried, canned, juice, or tablets are great sources of digestive enzymes.

GAS

Gas is caused by excessive gas in the stomach and intestines. It may be from the foods you have eaten that are not completely and properly digested.

While a pregnant woman needs to drink plenty of fluids, it is best to avoid iced water and carbonated beverages because they may produce excess gas.

Herbal remedies that may be used include

Slippery elm

Peppermint

Chamomile

Cinnamon

Lavender

Ginger

Peppermint lozenges are good to suck on.

A mixture of the above herbs may be mixed to taste, and sipped slowly throughout the day.

RUNNY NOSE
COLDS, FLU OR ALLERGIES

There are a number of herbal remedies that may be safely used during pregnancy to relieve the symptoms of a cold or the flu.

Identification of the cause of the allergy is most important. Check with your health care provider before using any remedies.

Try this Echinacea/Chamomile tea:

3 tsp Echinacea root -- 1 tsp Chamomile flowers -- 2 cups of water.

Simmer the Echinacea in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes. Strain and pour over the Chamomile flowers. Steep, covered, for fifteen minutes. Strain. Drink while hot.

Take vitamin C

Add 1 clove of garlic to each meal

Cayenne pepper is a powerful stimulant. It fights bacteria and is rich in vitamin C. It causes sweating and aids the bodys fight against infection. It increases fluid in the bronchial tubes, thins phlegm and relieves stuffiness and runny noses, and helps to keep the airways clear (avoid if you have excessive acid in your stomach).

CONSTIPATION

Constipation is often a problem during pregnancy.  This is due to the relaxing effect of hormones on the smooth muscles.  Simple measures are often all that are needed to relieve constipation.

A diet that has plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is most helpful. Fiber is found in fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, and whole grains.

Prunes, dried figs and apricots, rhubarb, apples, raisins, molasses, honey and sesame seeds all have a mild laxative effect.

AVOID synthetic laxatives as well as harsh herbal laxatives because they can cause premature contractions.

Eat natural yogurt, garlic, onions, and leeks.

Herbs that may be added to the diet include:

Slippery elm

Flax seed

Psyllium seeds (drink plenty of water with psyllium)

Licorice root (if no blood pressure problems)

Yellow dock

Chamomile

Dandelion root

Most fresh greens have a laxative quality and are rich in minerals.

Amaranth

Lambs Quarter

Violet Leaves

Drink plenty of fluids -- 8 -12 eight ounce glasses/day

Exercise is also important.

Mild laxative blender drink:

2 cups pineapple juice

½ cup yogurt

½ banana

1/4 cup Aloe vera juice

1 tbs slippery elm bark

1 tbs psyllium seed husks

place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

HEMORRHOIDS (PILES)

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins that occur in and around the rectum and anal canal. The cause is from restricted blood circulation to the area. They are common in pregnancy because Progesterone relaxes veins in the rectal area, and blood pools in the veins.

Avoid constipation, and try to keep your stools from becoming hard. Try not to sit for long periods of time.

Regular exercise and fluids are a must.

Cold compresses constrict the blood vessels and will help shrink the veins. Witch Hazel extract is an excellent compress for shrinking the veins.

If the hemorrhoids are enlarged and painful, apply a Comfrey/St. John's wort poultice to the area for one hour.

Papaya juice is also a good remedy.

VARICOSE VEINS/
LEG ACHES/LEG CRAMPS

Varicose veins are caused by pooling of blood in the veins. It is caused by the relaxed muscles in the veins, which makes them dilate and enlarge.

Support hose should be worn

Spend some time each day with your legs elevated. This allows the blood to flow freely to the heart and relieves pressure on the veins.

Lack of calcium is usually the main cause of leg ache/leg cramps, with poor circulation contributing to the problem.

Bathe the legs or vulva with herbal lotions two to three times a day to improve the tone of the veins.

Lotion:

1 part distilled witch hazel

1 part glycerol

1 part rose water

Apply to the affected area with cotton wool or a cloth.

Lecithin

Vitamin E

Rutin

supplements are helpful in preventing and repairing varicose veins.

Astringent liniment:

1 part yarrow

1 part shepherds purse

1 part calendula

1/4 part cayenne

Cover with warmed vinegar and/or witch hazel extract and let the mixture sit for 2-3 weeks. Strain and rebottle.

Butchers broom works as an anti-inflammatory for the vascular system, and causes increased circulation.

Raspberry leaf tea contains calcium, phosphorus and Vitamins A and C.

Nettle infusions supply calcium and phosphorus, vitamins A and D.

Wild greens -- lambs quarters, mallow, shepherds purse, and dandelion leaves all have great supplies of calcium.

Exercise to prevent muscle cramps.

Kegel exercises are great for hemorrhoids, varicosities, and leg aches and cramps.

BLADDER INFECTIONS

During pregnancy the blood volume increases up to 50%, causing the kidneys to work double time. The pressure placed on the kidneys by the expanding womb causes further stress.

Bladder infections have specific signs and symptoms. A frequent need to urinate (pass water), painful and/or incomplete urination, and a burning sensation during urination are the obvious signs. Pain in the lower back, on either side of the spine just below the ribs, fever and shivering, and feeling poorly are other signs.

Antibiotics are usually prescribed by your health care provider, but there are some herbal remedies that help.

The best known, and probably the most widely used remedy is unsweetened Cranberry juice.

Apple juice, mineral water, herbal teas, cider vinegar, and honey in warm water and barley water are suitable.

Tea:

1 ounce of corn silk

½ ounce of Echinacea root

½ ounce Dandelion leaf

Pour 4 cups boiling water over 4 tbs of the mixed herbs.

Steep one hour. Drink 1 cup 4 times a day for four days, then drink 1 cup per day for another 3 days.

Chamomile

Meadowsweet

Raspberry leaves

Lemon Balm
