Lighting

Compact Fluorescent Lights
Excerpts from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Fact Sheet :
1) Lighting accounts for 20-25 percent of the electricity used in the United States.
2) Electrical generation is the largest contributor of carbon dioxide emissions.
3) CFL bulbs use 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs.
4) The quality of light produced by a CFL bulb is comparable to an incandescent light bulb.
5) CFL bulbs are typically rated at 10,000 hours of light. Most standard incandescent bulbs are rated at 1000 hours or less.
** Items such as compact fluorescent bulbs can now be found at most major chains (Home Depot, Fred Meyer, Office Depot etc.), but the choice and quality of brands varies. Also CFL bulbs tend to be larger lengthwise than equivalent incandescent bulbs, but most styles, sizes and shapes for incandescents have been approximated. There are major differences in bulb life, CRI, bulb temp rating, reliability, time to reach full light output, noise and price. Quality in general has improved greatly in the most recent generation of CFL bulbs, but do your homework. Some internet shops give price breaks for volume purchases.

Washington County Disposal Sites for CFL bulbs N/A There is a very small amount of mercury (0.005 g or 5 milligrams) sealed in the glass tubing of CFLs. This mercury vapor is what makes the CFL light. No mercury is released from the CFL when it is in use. Unbroken, burned out CFLs emit no mercury. While the amount of mercury in a single bulb is extremely small, there is a potential risk of contamination if large numbers of bulbs break in landfills. That's why used bulbs should be disposed of properly. Please don't put used fluorescents in the garbage. Instead, take them to your local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection site.
