January 18, 1967JOAN DeWAELSCHE MEMORIAL FUND
The sudden passing of Joan DeWaelsche confronts the Milford Community with a situation without precedent in the momory of its oldest residents. For the first ime we have orphaned children in our midst - no less than eight of them - with only two of these having attained their majority.
Ever since theire father Morris, passed away suddenly, some nine years ago, with Mark the youngest only three months of age, this gallant lady and devoted mother has cheerfully toiled to hold the family as one. Not only has she succeed in this but, giving without thought of herself, she has raised a beautiful family.
An example in life, her sudden and untimely passing affords us now an opportunity and a challenge. We believe it to be the will of the larger family, the Milford Community, that these children remain intact as a family unit, and in our midst. Money alone cannot accomplish this end but its availability for their needs can and will do much to stabilize and strengthen the prospect.
The following individuals, along with another neighbor to be added later, are, therefore, taking formal steps to establish and administer the Joan DeWaelsche Memorial Fund: Wilbur Johnson, Mrs. Albert Boyle, Mervyn H. Kidd and W. L. (Larry) Mainland.
Neighboring residents are invited to make their contribution to this fund. This may be in the form of one cash donation in any amount. Recognizing that the needs of young children are going to be continuing, some contributrions have been made on the basis of a modest predge covering five years.
As Treasurer of the Fund, Mr Kidd will accept donation at his office in the Community National Bank, Milford Branch. Other than Mr. Kidd, only the above listed members of this group are authorized to solicit or accept contributions, and in every instance an offical receipt will be given the donor.
In quietly joining together in this deserving cause we cannot fail to reap the dividend of a finer community and share in the common pride that Milford takes care of its own.W. L. (Larry) Mainland

RAISIN BREAD RECIPEThis is the recipe for raisin bread that I so loved watching my Grandma make when I was a child. I enjoyed watching it being made but enjoyed eating it even more. I have this compliments of Kathy DeSchepper Hogan and I can't thank her enough.
Raisin Bread
1 Box Raisins
7 Eggs
1 1/2 sugar
1 tablespoon Salt
2 1/2 cups half & half
3/4 Water for yeast
3 yeast
1 stick butter
1 teaspoon Cinammon
and flourThis is the Vervinck recipe for your wonderful raisin bread---I would start with 3 1/2 cups of flour and go from there. No temp (but in the old days there was no temp). I understand why this is so good now after looking at the recipe.

August Vervinck, 67 years old, a resident of Benzie county for over thirty-five years, passed away at his farm home near the River road, last Friday afternoon after an illness extending over a period of three months.
Mr. Vervinck was born in Belgium in 1862 and came to this country shortly after his marriage, coming directly to Frankfort where they resided for some time. The family then moved to Empire and were located near the Leelanau county village for about five years, moving back again to Frankfort and then to the farm which has since been his home.
Besides Mrs. Vervinck, seven children, six daughters and one son, survive to mourn their loss: Mrs. helen DeWalsche, Detroit; Elizabeth Neirynck, Detroit; Mrs. Floy Schipper, Kansas City; Camille Vervinck, Detroit; Mrs. Alice Scrutter, Flint; Mrs. Mary Drydal, Detroit; Mrs. Mary Walker, Detroit. He also leaves a host of friends and neighbors who paid their last respects to a kind friend and a good neighbor.
Funeral services for the deceased were held at St. Ann's church at Frankfort Monday morning at 9 o'clock and conducted by Rev. Fr. Kosinok. The arrangements were under the direction of B. G. Bennett.
Auction sale of the farm goods was held last week and Mrs. Vervinck will leave this week to make her home this winter with her daughters in Detroit.

___________________________________________________________________________________________Probate Notice in the Benzie Record at her death listed her name as Emma Vervinck Vantomme indicating that she may have remarried after August's death in 1929. There is a Rene Vantomme listed in the 1929 Detroit city directory who lived not far from where Emma would have stayed with her daughters in Detroit after August's death. Rene, however, had a wife (Mary) listed in that directory.
