Grammies for Contemporary World Music Album and Pop Instrumental

to Throw Down Your Heart!

My count on Bela's Grammy History (for details click on Awards above):

Wins Nominations
Contemporary World Music        1                    1
Contemporary Jazz Album 2 3
Classical Crossover 1 1
Instrumental Arrangement 1 1
Country Instrumental 2 9
Instrumental Composition 1 1
Pop Instrumental 2 4
Bluegrass 2
World Music 1
Spoken Word for Children 1
Jazz Instrumental 3
Jazz Album 2
10 30

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy) Bela "has been nominated in more categories than any other musician".  Also, Wikipedia says that Pat Metheny holds the record for Grammy wins in the most different categories with 6.  According to my count, Bela has wins in 7 categories. However, both of these pale in comparison with Alison Krauss.

The Concerto for Banjo, Bass and Tabla premiered on Sept 9  2006 at the opening of the new Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, with Edgar, Bela & Zakir Hussain.  Released (with Detroit Sym-Slatkin) along with 6 Trio recordings as The Melody Of Rhythm.  On Koch 2024, released 8/25/09.

Check out the article by Julie Melrose that appeared in the Daily Hampshire Gazette about the Acoustic Trio.

Capitol has released the compilation NGR: Grass Roots.  This is now the definitive NGR collection.  Includes cuts from the last concert 12/31/89 opening for The Dead.

Mobile Fidelity has reissued Drive with an additional track, Shuckin' the Corn.

Bela appears on Pat Flynn's first solo album, ReQuest.

Bela/Edgar: Music for Two, a groundbreaking necessity.

Bela and Scott Vestal now have banjos made by Bill Stokes and Robin Smith from Timeless Timber (Scott used his on Bluegrass 2001).  These are logs that are about 700 years old, and have been at the bottom of Lake Superior for about the last 125 years.  Anaerobic bacteria have eaten the heavy stuff out of the wood, so that the wood is lighter and can transmit sound better.  According to Will Harbin, Bela will be using his as a travel banjo for overseas and restricted flights, apparently in order to protect his much-more-expensive ($50K) pre-war Gibson RB75.  Bela had one banjo lost/stolen (the one with a pivot on a belt, that he use to twirl after Victor did his over the shoulder twirl).  Will  (WHarbin@iss.net) has ordered one of the Old Wood banjos.

Bela is on Chris Thile's solo CD Not All Who Wander Are Lost, on Sugar Hill.  David Royko, who knows,  says it is one of the top 10 New Acoustic/Newgrass albums of all time!

Bela's Perpetual Motion is yet another bold step by Bela in a new direction.  It consists of 20 classical pieces, performed as solos, duos and trios, with a dazzling array of guests including: Edgar, Joshua Bell, Gary Hoffman, John Williams, and Chris Thile.   Composers are Bach (8), Chopin (3), 2 each by Scarlatti, Pagannini and Beethoven, and one each by Debussy, Tschaikovsky and Brahms.  The approach is respectful, and the differences from the standard performances of these works is in the unusual instrumentation, and perhaps some variations in the timing.  For his first time out as a classical soloist, Bela is probably ensuring that he can be accepted as a credible classical performer.  Now that this has been established, perhaps on the next one he can take a few liberties and, in the spirit of Bach, add a good chunk of improvisation (jamming?).

The Tribute to John Hartford: Live From Mountain Stage , Blue Plate 405 has a rare appearance of Bela, John Cowan and Pat Flynn, on John's Dark As a Dungeon.  This is the only recent appearance I know of for these three with The Garth not present.  Bela and Pat also perform John Hartford's On the Road.

Live Art II is in the works.

Futch (aka Feuture Man, Futureman, Future Man as well as Royel, Roy El, and Roy-El, which are not to be confused with RoyEl which is an instrument-with frequencies based on the periodic table) and the Indigenous Planet Band have released his first solo CD: Volume One: Seamless Script.  The closest existing musical category is probably Space/Environmental. A video of "evolution d'amour" is also available.  Included is the documentary Requiem of the Lost Chords Check them out at Indigenous Planet .
