Cape May

Cape May is the oldest seaside resort in the U.S.; and for that reason alone, New Jersey is probably responsible for inventing the whole notion of American Leisure Time and the entire middle class travel industry.  Up to that point, the working class worked and worked.  Leisure was for the rich.  A postcard Victorian village, Cape May is a great place to relax and enjoy. It is also the best place in the region to get a New York-class meal at New Jersey prices.

Ocean Drive Cape May

What we do: Walk Walk Walk.  The ‘boardwalk’ is concrete but still gives a great ocean and town view. The lighthouse has a small wildlife museum. Otherwise, we stroll and shop, have a drink and dine at the Washington Inn or Merion’s.  On the way out of town, we can’t resist having a snack of clams or raw oysters at the Lobster House. For more casual drinking and dining there’s The Ugly Mug or the Pilot House.

If You Go: Cape May has dozens of first class Bed & Breakfasts, standard hotels, and apartments. They are all good, but if you choose a hotel be willing to put up with annoying families.  The Christmas season features historic house tours.
