About the Artist
When someone asks how long I have painted, a simple answer is not forthcoming. I started oil painting in 1963 and painted off and on until 1993 when I started painting in earnest. I am also asked why I started painting. This is harder to answer. When I think back over my earlier years, I recollect events that could be considered portents of my future career. I seemed to have strong talents in composition and in artistic expression.
At the present time my delight is in painting identifiable subjects that I consider decorative but, at the same time, convey some message. For example, I may, by showing contrast, reflect on the past vs. the present, or, I may compose the painting in an imaginary way to tell the story. My subject matter is quite eclectic. Many of my paintings are of foreign scenes. This is the result of my experiences over three decades of traveling the world in connection with my business career of the importation and distribution of furniture. In recent years I have continued to travel abroad expressly to find good subjects for painting. I do some plein air painting, but mostly take lots of pictures and make lots of sketches from which I make paintings in my studio.
The most frequent comment I hear about my work is that my use of perspective in my compositions make the viewer feel that they are right there. This is most gratifying to me as I strongly feel the viewer and the painting should interact. Another feature of my painting, especially landscapes, is that I try to include people, animals or other life creatures. I like to feel that I paint live pictures and not dead ones that depict only trees and grass.
As I continue to work I look for challenges. I seek out subjects, activities and places that are new to me and that are not often seen. I will continue to travel abroad, but I will also paint from the great abundance of subjects here in California. I hope that you will give me feedback as you review my work from time to time on this website.
