At the eastern end of the Pyrenees are several provinces in Spain and France that make up a mostly mountainous enclave called the Basque Region. Distinctions from the neighboring regions run the gamut from language, gastronomy, dress and customs to politics and the spirit of independance. It has a fascinating history from medieval times to the present. For the painting we used a snapshot of a lad with his oxen team that we took near San Sebastian in 1949.
