Suzhou is connected to Shanghai with this canal that has been used for centuries for commerce and communication. The city, known as the silk capitol of China, now is a growing manufacturing center. Taking an excursion boat along the canal exposes the city's homey atmosphere. There are numerous bridges, some from ancient times, side canals and intimate views of current lifestyles. One is reminded of Venice, but with sampans instead of gondolas.
