Etretat, Normandy

Etretat was a popular resort town in the mid nineteenth century. A number of the new wave of artists , including Monet, settled there temporarily while they developed the style later on to be known as "impressionism". The geology of the coast intrigued them, and this formation, called "the needle" was painted many times.
