Montmartre, Paris
The Sacre-Coeur basilica was placed on the butte of Montmartre to combat the loose lifestyle of the area. It didn't, but if it had we might not have had the impressionists' exhibitions and Toulouse-Lautrec. Today it is a lively tourist spot overflowing with bistros and restaurants, and a central block ringed with hawkers of paintings and trinkets.
