The Ninomaru Garden is the principal garden of three at Nijo Castle, Kjoto. Within the garden there is a large pond containing 3 islands, "Island of Eternal Happiness", "Crane Island" and "Turtle Island". The garden was designed by Kobori Enshu and was constructed in the early 17th century. The carefully sculptured trees and shrubs take a back seat compared to the approximately 1000 different kinds of rocks of many colors, sizes and shapes that seem to be placed in random pattern throughout the garden.
