Roman Foot Bridge, Chester, England
Chester, in northern England and close to Wales had a long history of conflicts with opposing forces in Wales and, earlier, as a Roman settlement protecting itself from attacks by the indigenous tribes. It is a tourist's delight in that so much of its history remains to be seen and experienced today. In this painting from the wall that encircles city you can see the old Roman foot bridge. Notice that the arches of the bridge are not identical though similar. The bridge was obviously partially destroyed on several occasions and rebuilt. The trough in the foreground holds lumber that has been transported down the river, and just below it there seems to be water sprayed out from a water treatment facility.
