Snowdonia, Wales

This area in northern Wales has the highest elevations in England, about 3500 ft.  The land and mountains are made of sedimentary rock and shale that has been pushed up from the Irish Sea by geologic forces. Consequently, the soil is thin and the layered look in the rock formations is everywhere. The mountains are close to the populated coastal area so hiking is a popular sport.
