WEAVER Family Tree

I recently added some ancestral trees for some of my famous and infamous relatives, more will follow this latest update, also did some reformatting.

I spent some sixty years researching my genealogy. When I began, I didn't know what I was doing or why. It was just a burning curiosity to fill in one of those family charts hidden between the Old and New Testaments in a new bible. I spent many years figuring out how to use the computer to display my research. It is much easier today than it was back then.

I currently maintain over 200 separate genealogy databases of families, extended families and possible families. I posted most of these on the Internet as family tree web pages. Since my last major web page update some fifteen months ago, I received thousands of emails with suggestions, corrections and additions. I made as many of those changes as possible to the databases. Also, I was able to merge several of the smaller databases. My personal WEAVER family tree has been expanded to contain more than 129,732 individuals (after removing some duplicates and errors) and more than 38,000 surnames. I updated the large family tree web page to include all the past correspondence. If your ancestors were here during the early days of the country, they are very likely found somewhere in one of my family trees. Browse the family trees and thousands of other links and see if you can find your ancestors on one of my web pages. If you see errors, omissions, have additional information or suggestions, please email that information to me at: wi4r@comcast.net

Note to WEAVER researchers: I descend from Humphrey WEVER of Wales, who was the first of Norman descent to use the WEAVER surname. He took the name and spelling from a nearby river and not from his trade as was common. Most other WEAVER's use the more common spelling. However, researchers should be careful to identify and separate these WEAVER's from the Germanic WEBER's, many of whose names were Anglicized to WEAVER by the early English speaking scribes. While many WEAVER's intermarried with Anglicized WEBER's, my WEAVER's are not generally direct descendants of those. Also, there is a WEBBER, which is an English spelling. I have found seventeen different spellings for my WEAVER ancestors. Don't let the spelling in any old record lead you astray.

Who are we? I’ve thought about this for many years. It’s the main reason I started my genealogy research and why I tested my DNA. Not a day goes by that I don’t hear some comment about this subject and yet so few people actually know or investigate this question. One morning I heard a TV reporter interviewing Charlie Daniels about why country musicians are such strong supporters of the “War Against Terrorism.” Many would consider Charlie one of the leaders of this movement. His answer would satisfy most people but it goes much deeper than his brief response would indicate. Yes, we are influenced by what happens to us on a daily basis, where we live and work but more importantly we are genetically determined before the foundation of the world and that can’t be changed. We can change our appearance, our language, or our religion but we can’t change the fact that two people got together thousands of years ago and joined their DNA to yield a strain of DNA that stretches over the eons and persists within us still today. That is who we are and we cannot change that. I’ve done a fair amount of research on the subject and I’m going to save you a lot of time and trouble if you have any interest in the subject. I’m speaking more directly to those visitors who find their DNA inseparably linked to mine. If you are related to me you need to understand who I am and thus who we are. One of the briefest explanations I’ve found is given in reference #1 (This is not a joke and do not be disillusioned by your first impression of reference #1.) This is expanded in reference #2. Finally, it is covered in greatest detail in reference #3 in the section related to the Borderers or Backcountry people. These are three of the best sources I’ve found.

Credits and Disclaimer

I would like to personally thank and give credit to all those who have helped and contributed to my genealogical research since I started my research almost fifty years ago. It is beyond my ability to remember all the archivists, librarians, court clerks, professional genealogists, amateur genealogists, family and friends but I need to mention a few special contributors. I started on my own, knowing almost nothing about anyone in my family. My first positive contact was dad's first cousin, Dr. Stella WEAVER DILLAHUNTY of Montgomery, AL, who knows more about our family and history than anyone I’ve met. Without her vast resources, documentation and family tradition, my WEAVER line could not be preserved. She has been working on a WEAVER family book for some years now and this is certainly not meant to be an infringement on her efforts in any way. It took almost five years to find her and through her kindness and assistance, at least I had an idea where to start looking for my lost WEAVER ancestors. James Kenneth BASS of Vinings, GA brought forth a lot of newly found cousins when he published his book, "The WEAVER Families of Georgia." Rev. James William DUPREE of Americus, GA contributed a great deal of WEAVER research and has been a faithful correspondent for more than thirty years. Mary WEAVER GARCIA of Santa Fe, NM was the first cousin I met via snail mail and that was about thirty years ago. Silvia Lee WEAVER NIMMO, who donated all of her research on Othniel, including a copy of the Clement WEAVER book. I know I’m leaving many out but you will find your name somewhere within the family trees and I do thank you for all you have done.

I'd also like to mention the Othniel WEAVER Family Reunion, held each summer at Sowathchee, GA. Cousins Steven SHIRAH and Dr. Roland TERRELL have done a wonderful job with that reunion and all of Othniel’s relatives are invited (I will provide their contact address on request).

My research includes visits to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and East Point, GA, the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, UT as well as many state archives, courthouses, cemeteries, public and private libraries in AL, AK, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IA, KS, LA, ME, MD, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WY. Not to mention the tens of thousands of web pages I’ve browsed. It helps to have been in the Navy for forty-three years and retired from Delta Air Lines when one gets involved in a worldwide project like this. I don't want to slight any of these valuable resources either but one I particularly enjoy is the Washington Library in Macon, GA.

I would like to mention one book that was particularly helpful, "History and Genealogy of a Branch of the WEAVER Family" by Lucius E. Weaver (1928), Rochester, NY. This is a wonderful resource but like many books published in the north after the "War of Northern Aggression," it does not mention any of the descendants who came South. I discovered, with much difficulty, many fine descendants living in the South, from possibly every line mentioned in the book. Like my Northern brethren, when I began my research, I would not have believed that I could possibly have ancestors who lived on the opposite side of the Mason Dixon Line. Time has a way of changing things and now I accept this truth. Almost without exception, my lines came through the northeast seaports, as did most Southern Americans.

I used many genealogy programs on this project but the main one, on which I keep all my master records, is Personal Ancestral File. I used the 5.0 version to create the latest web pages. It can be downloaded for free at familysearch.org. There are many errors in the tree yet to be resolved. I do not understand all the relationships the program generates nor can I prove them myself. I will assume them to be correct until someone states otherwise. I also use Family Tree Maker to exchange information with others because it seems to be the most popular and easily used by the non-computer literate masses. Perhaps its popularity is due to the many CD's of genealogical information available with the program. I have about fifty of the CD's but seldom use them and prefer to use the Internet search engines and information that is available, without charge, to anyone with Internet access. Any references to FTM World Family Tree program within these family trees come from the submissions of gedcom files received from the many cousins and other contributors I’ve met via the Internet.

Two years ago I subscribed to my first paid genealogy service and it has been very beneficial. My subscription to www.ancestry.com expires annually and I intend to renew it again. It has definitely been worth it to me but I wouldn’t recommend a subscription to just anyone. One must be a serious and dedicated genealogist to warrant the expenditure, especially the World Edition, which has thus far has contributed nothing to my research.

I welcome any comments, favorable or otherwise, concerning these family trees. If you're in here and shouldn't be or you should be and aren't, please let me know and I will do whatever possible make this information as accurate as possible. All I can do is all I can do and I welcome your help. If I’ve misplaced, lost or forgotten you, please let me know that too.

This is not a commercial web site! I’m not buying or selling anything. I did not create, generate or dream up anything on this site. All of the information contained on this web site was freely and willingly contributed by WEAVER relatives or friends, without coercion or financial considerations; extracted from genealogical publications in the aforementioned public archives and libraries; from publications and periodicals I purchased on the open markets; from free internet sources; and from the thousands of letters and emails I received from interested and concerned family and friends. Everything posted here is available to anyone with the wherewithal to look for it. I have never asked so much as a nickel for even one Xerox copy I made for people, the research trips I’ve made for requestors, any postage, on-line charges or anything else related to this information. I would ask that anyone accessing this web site to refrain from the commercial use of any information on this page or in any of the linked pages without proper permission of the original contributor. I don’t accept monetary donations so don’t send any!

 Thank you for your visit!
