A HOUSE DIVIDED: Civil War Family Connections

·         CS General Robert E. Lee's sister, Anne, along with her husband, William Marshall, sided with the Union.  Their son Louis served on the staff of US General John Pope.  The honor of the most generals in the Confederate army from a single family fell to the Lees of Virginia with Robert E. Lee, his two sons George Washington Custis Lee and William Henry Fitzhugh Lee, and his nephew, Fitzhugh Lee.  CSN Commander Richard Lucien Page was cousin to General Lee.

·         CS General Samuel Cooper was the father-in-law of US General Frank Wheaton and uncle of CS General Fitzhugh Lee.

·         CS General Benjamin Hardin Helm was married to Emily Todd, sister of Mary Todd Lincoln.  The White House was draped in mourning for the death Helm who was mortally wounded September 20, 1863 at Chickamauga and died September 21.  CS Major George Rogers Clark Todd was Mary's brother.  US General Andrew Porter was the grandson of the Revolutionary War General Andrew Porter and a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln.

·         US General George Gordon Meade's sister, Charlotte, a resident of Vicksburg, was married to a Southerner, Alfred Ingraham.  The Ingrahams, having sided with the Confederacy, lost one son in an early engagement of the war, a soldier son-in-law to disease and another son at Chancellorsville.  Meade was also the brother-in-law of CS General Henry Alexander Wise.

·         Virginia-born George Henry Thomas, a US general who became known as 'The Rock of Chickamauga', remained loyal to the Union even though his family disowned him and his property was seized by his native state. While in great need after the war, his sisters rejected Thomas' aid saying they had no brother.

·         CS General Abraham Buford was cousin to US General John Buford and his half-brother, US General Napoleon Bonaparte Buford.

·         US General Philip St. George Cooke was the father of CS General John Rogers Cooke and father-in-law of CS General James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart.

·         CS General George Bibb Crittenden was the son of US Senator John Jordan Crittenden, brother of US General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden and cousin of US General Thomas Turpin Crittenden.

·         US General John Gibbon had three brothers in the Confederate army including Dr. Robert Gibbon, Surgeon in Lane's NC Brigade.

·         CS General Thomas Fenwick Drayton was the brother of US Navy Captain Percival Drayton.

·         US General Edwin Vose Sumner was the father-in-law of CS General Armistead Lindsay Long.

·         CS General Humphrey Marshall was cousin to US Generals David Bell Birney and William Birney.

·         CS Brigadier General James Edwin Slaughter was the nephew of President James Monroe.

·         CS General Richard Taylor was the son of US President Zachary Taylor, nephew of US General Joseph Pannell Taylor, cousin of CS General Lafayette McLaws, brother-in-law of CS General Allen Thomas and brother-in-law of Jefferson Davis by Davis' first wife, Sara Knox Taylor.

·         CS General James Barbour Terrill was the brother of US General William Rufus Terrill.

·         CS General Lucius Marshall Walker was the nephew of US President James K. Polk and brother-in-law of CS General Frank Crawford Armstrong.

·         US General John Bailie McIntosh was the brother of CS General James McQueen McIntosh.
