The Oberkassel district of Dusseldorf is right
across the Rhein from
the Altstadt, where, according to Mike, three of the four best brewpubs
for
Altbier are located. So after a quick trip to the ATM it's across the
river,
park on the edge of Altstadt, and walk around ask directions. We found
some
great street art all over the place, some whimsical, some very impressive.
After some time and a lot of walking we came to our first stop, Zum
Schlussel.
This place was very nice, the kind of place
you could take someone to,
if you wanted to impress them. It had several bars up front and several
dining rooms behind the bars , and all the way in the back was the
brewery.
All spit and polish, brightly lit and friendly. The Alt was malty and
hoppy,
nicely balanced, and cold, that's right, not cool, cold. Very refreshing.
After three we went to Zum Uerige.
This place was much cozier with several bars
also. We went to the bar
in the back and sat at an old keg which they use for tables. There
were
casks of various sizes all over the place and the Alt was dispensed
from
them. It was the best we had all day, really full and robust, makes
me
thirsty just thinking about it. So, we stayed there a while, had liverwurst
sandwiches for lunch, met a German couple, Petr and his wife (we never
caught her name), talked to them about America. They like to visit
America
and had taken many vacations here. After a while we tried the Weizen,
cause
Mike recommended it in the book. It was really great, fruity vanilla
and
highly carbonated, yum. Excuse me I have to take a trip to the fridge.
Aahhhh! Where was I. OK so Petr and his wife
guided us to the next
brewpub on our (Mike's) list, Im Fuchschen (The Fox), this place was
smaller, darker but friendly. The Alt was drier but still very good,
but it
was too late, we got spoiled at Zum Uerige. So after a couple it was
off to
our last stop. Although the last of Michael Jackson's Big Four wasn't
in
Altstadt, there was a bar called The Goldene Kessel that served Schumacher
Altbier.
We walked past it a couple of times but eventually
we looked up and saw
the sign. This place was a midsized, bright, nice but informal bar.
The Alt
was good but I forget the character. we bumped into a couple of German
drunks and we had a good time talking even though neither of us had
a clue
what the other was saying. They served us two beers there and that
was it.
So we stumbled around for a while, found the
car, and made it back to
the Hostel for a well deserved nap.
Next up, the last of Dusseldorf, ... I swear
