What Does a Copyeditor Do?
I'm a freelance copyeditor* with more than two decades of experience. My clients are trade book publishers. I've also proofread or copyedited newsletters, pharmaceutical text, and scientific journals.
Here is a list of the duties I perform as a copyeditor:
- Correct faulty spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation
- Ensure consistency in spelling, hyphenation, numerals, fonts, and capitalization; employ house style where applicable
- Rewrite text and headings to achieve parallel structure
- Keep track of plot, setting, and character traits in fiction; query discrepancies
- Flag ambiguous or factually incorrect statements
- Typemark or code the manuscript (on paper or in Word file)
- Eliminate wordiness and inappropriate jargon
- Rewrite to smooth transitions; rearrange sentences to improve readability
*I spell copyeditor as one word. Copy editor, too, is acceptable.
