I Don't Love You Anymore

Jonathan Brown was born in Devonshire England in 1878.Orphaned at a young age he never knew real love until he met Elizabeth Sutton, daughter of the Duke of Windsborough.Though a pauper Elizabeth was drawn to this aspiring writer for his good looks and charm. She quickly won his heart and delighted in breaking it.Johnathan's lament was found crudely written among his personal belongings when he died in 1899.

The cold wind blows and the rain begins to pour
I stare blankly out my window

And realize,I don't love you anymore

The wind is as cold as your heart

And the rain is the epitaph of the tears I cried
Washing away the love that has died

My mind wanders to the day when first we met
In the village woods we were beholders of that glowing sunset
That set the tone for many a warm and happy day
I had been lost for so long

Now at last,I had found my way

I wasn't lonely or sad anymore

You opened a new door

To love,light,joy,and reason

The winter of my life faded into a new season
The chords that had been all wrong

Turned into our song

And my heartstrings became as a violin in spring
Two became one and soon church bells would ring
That day all my dreams came true

The flower of love had bloomed and now I had you
I cherished and nourished you for many a day
But my Blossom wilted when another came her way
I guess Love must exit to enter

Today she is like the dead weeds of winter
She is now in someone else's heart

Maybe she will bring him spring like she did for me
Maybe they can watch the same sunsets under our favorite tree
Picnic down the hill by the sparkling brook
Steal a kiss in our secret little wooded nook
Today she is but a memory of yesterday's rose
A chapter in a book I must close

But it hurts so much I want you to know

Can I ever forget the golden sunset's glow
And the joy you brought to my life

The day you became my wife

I don't know what lies ahead or may be in store

As the cold wind blows and the rain pounds on my door

A flower blooms on some distant shore

But not for me

I don't love you anymore

POET'S HEAVEN

Last night I dreamed that I died
And God sent me to a place for poet's that tried
For bread to rise it needs leaven
He sent this chaff to poet's Heaven
First thing he said was that you may not be here long
The poets that are here will judge your song
If they like it perhaps you can stay
If not,you are on your way
I was as happy as a baby at birth
When first I saw William Wordsworth
He smiles and began to recite
My heart was pounding and my chest was tight
"A pagan suckled in a creed outworn.
So might I,standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpse that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn."
"A sample" he chuckled as he walked away
I was speechless,not a word could I say
Then Elizabeth Barrett Browning walked through the door
Her lovely words filled my pores
"A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lost thy love thereby!
But love me for love's sake, thats evermore
Tho mayst love on,through love's eternity."
Leaving without a sign
Poe's piercing eyes next were on mine
" But our love it was stronger far than the love
Of those that were older than we,
Of many far wiser than we.
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:"
A raven flew in as he disappeared
And my body shivered in a state I feared
I didn't know how long I had to tarry
My breath returned when I saw Phoebe Cary
" Suppose the world doesn't please you.
Nor the way some people do;
Do you think the whole creation
Will be altered just for you?
And isn't it my boy or girl,
The wisest,bravest plan,
Whatever comes or doesn't come,
To do the best you can?"
"Come my dear Winston, you must have something to say,
If in Poet's Heaven, with us you want to stay"
So much I wanted to be chosen
But not a word could I utter,my lips were frozen
Then Ella Wheeler Wilcox spoke to me
"You never can tell when you do an act
Just what the result will be,
But with every deed you are sowing a seed,
Though the harvest you may not see.
Each kindly act is an acorn dropped
In God's productive soil;
You may not know, but the tree shall grow
With shelter for those who toil"
She took my hand and kissed me as I cried
For a fleeting moment I was in Poet's Heaven
And only in dreams will I ever go there
But at least I tried

Sometimes I Cry

For all the joy I have ever known
Laughter often than not is not the emotion I have shown
It may seem odd that the tears that are shown for sorrow
Are more often then not joys for tomorrow
I cried tears of joy when I first met you
I cried because because I couldn't believe it was true
That you cared about children, animals and our Earth
No matter how small, everything had its worth
No amount of money or fame will ever change that fact
So forgive me sometimes if foolish I act
Sorrow is not the burden that makes me sigh
More often than not I'm happy when I cry

You and Me

YOU and ME

Some things were just meant to be
Most of all you and me
Together like the clouds and the sky
Saturn and her rings way on high
Texas and her bluebonnets
Shakespeare and his sonnets
Italy and Rome
With you I am Home
No more mountain summits thrill
Or dream of castles in Seville
Sail the oceans wide
One more time the pampas ride
These things I no longer miss
For I have found Heaven in your kiss
The stars in your eyes
The moon even sighs
When we embrace
The Earth pauses in space
And gives a gentle smile
Love reigns forever and a while
That is the way it will always be
Together,you and me

Princess CornBlossom

Long ago in a land called Kentucky, home of the bear, deer and opossum
Lived an Indian Princess known as CornBlossom
Fair as the yellow of the corn and the tassels in the morn
Her beauty was boundless,no man could scorn
The shining star of Chief Doublehead
A beacon to the tribe she led
In August 1810, under Yahoo Falls
The dream dies and death calls
Women and children of the Cherokee Nation would cry in pain
As their blood flowed marking forever history's stain
Mocking the peace cry of the white man's refrain
Massacred in cold blood under a refuge they sought
By evil white men and the justice they brought
CornBlossom was mortally wounded but for two more days she would live
This flower from Heaven had no more to give
Before she died she screamed these words
So loud even the eagles heard
"WE ARE NOT CONQUERED YET"
The sun on her memory will never set
And sometimes on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee
An Eagle flies and I know CornBlossom is free

LOUISIANA

The spanish moss grows on cypress tree
Where the mighty Mississippi flows into the sea
This lonely bayou land which I love so much
Is surely a place God had to touch
From Baton Rouge to New Orleans
Southern Belles and Cajun Queens
Blessed from God up above
Louisiana,land I love

EAST OF THE MOON AND WEST OF THE SUN

There is a place just for you and I
Where the joy replaces the cry
A place so far away
You have to travel many a day
There are no sign post to guide
Only a rainbow to ride
Your journey has just begun
And your destination is East of the Moon and West of the Sun
No road or path showing the way
Once you leave you must stay
So come and go with me
Where our love can be forever free
I am going now and I will meet you there
Where the sun never sets on a care
And the culmination of a million dreams undone
Finally come to pass, East of the Moon and West of the Sun

KATHLEEN

The cold wind blows the dunes of the shifting sand
As I stand here in the Desert of Man
And in the distance like a mirage I see
A lovely and graceful tree
And it brings to me a vision I've seen
Of a beautiful life force named Kathleen
Here in this oasis where the springs sing their song
Amidst miles and miles of desolation long
It grows from the barren soil in this land extreme
A windblown and timeless evergreen
When my book is read and my story is told
The desert winds whisper"some things never grow old"
Love.grace and beauty through the centuries unfold
As I look into the shining star sky and ask "what does it all mean"
Heaven smiles above the canopy Queen
As the moon lights the evergreen
And the wind of love replies "Kathleen"

MELODY OF LIFE
There is a melody of life and as I watch it go by
it softly speaks to me of years past ,a song with the refrain why
the chords of love, honor, trust and duty filled the air
and once I thought they would always be there
to use and cherish in our own life song
the melody remains but the words are wrong
love has turned to dust from the sandstone whence it came
and the sweet lyrics of honor, trust and duty are now just a game
the lost notes hauntingly fill the air as I intently listen
for a song that never comes while teardrops glisten
oh,compose it all over for me again
and keep those sweet lyrics as it was then
but as the violin is silent without the bow
true love needs a fertile field to grow
then Life's melody will always be heard
as clear and happy as a songbird
so when your music fills the air and the clouds sing in the sky
gone like the stardust of yesterdays refrain, why

FALLOW FIELDS

oh weep would I for dreams never true
of a vanished yesterday for me and you
in fantasies fields with hope planted deep
a promised harvest for a growers reap
with skyward eyes I watch and wait
as the fiery orb seals my fate
my crops unplanted for I've no water
doomed as the son of destiny's daughter
oh love come back to field of fallow
together plant the seeds in dreams so hallow
wayward and wandering spirit return whence you belong
to the soil of happiness and roots so strong
the sun rises and the dream dies
love fades in eternal skies
water my soul and let it grow
banish every care that I may know
whether fields fertile or fallow
love never blooms fair and callow
in a heart grown to stone
so wishes defied and memories gone
the wind blows the sand from the fields
time passes and time heals
the bleached bones from yesterday's tallow
llies in wait in fields of fallow
requiem for a lover's trust
till we meet dust to dust

BRANDON AND THE MONEY TREE

Brandon and I took a walk one day
A money tree we found in the woods far away
I promised him and he promised me
Never would we tell about the money tree
we used it for a lot of things
Toys, bikes,and diamond rings
The rest of the world may live in poverty
Brandon and I have the money tree
He's going to buy Mom a house on the hill
Anything he wants for brother Bill
It will always bring a smile, never a tear
But don't tell anyone Papa or it will disappear
I have never told anyone until this day
And though I promised I would never say
Where we found the money tree that day
Now that Brandon's grown up and gone away
I look up and see his picture in a frame
I have to tell them Brandon, it was just a game
But worth something far more than the money tree
Are those precious memories and the love you have for me
For all the gold and silver on this earth
Could never measure up to Brandon's worth

IF

If I could have been someone else and not me
I wonder If I would have made any difference in the world that we see
Could anyone have possibly known or given a tinker's damn
what I might have been or who the hell I am
would I wander just as aimlessly as I do now
or If I could have been another would the world differ somehow
the significance of who I am doesn't really matter
in a world filled with pettiness and clatter
so I will just stumble along and try not to fall
and someday quicken my pace and stand so tall
so proud of me my presence you would always miss
and the rose you caress tonight would be our eternal kiss
miserably I have failed
and happiness has not prevailed
but crawl I must before I run
and run must I before I am done
to find that elusive me or that someone I might have been
or be caged forever in the serpent's den
my chains unschackled and now I am free
not to be you,I can only be me
so listen to me my little lad
all in all that is not to bad
perhaps we should be thankful who we are
for a road not crossed is a bridge to far
and a life ain't worth living
if the taking exceeds the giving
so forgive me for repeating this riff
and forget I ever asked "what If"

WHO AM I

I look into the mirror and see the same face every day
But who is the man in the glass who reflects my way
How well do I really know him and what truth will he tell
Is he of Heaven or headed for Hell
Oh answer me my friend and be honest once in your life
for you see integrity is sharp as a razor and can cut like a knife
into the evilness and degradation in a world filled with strife
of what mettle are you oh lonely eyes who gaze back at me
can't you just say something even if it is a lie
can't you just be a man once before you die
do you know who the hell you are or don't you have a clue
of where you are going and what you are going to do
dusk is falling and the day is late
the ticking clock awaits your fate
oh destiny,friend of mine
I drink of thy bittersweet wine
and see my epitaph carved in stone
for me and me alone
the inscription I will not say
for it is a price to high to pay
but the winds of life will not blow forever
and mercy not ceaselessly granted by the Caregiver
so take heed soon before you die
and answer soon that face, who am I

FROM WHOM THE BELLS TOLL

To whom much is given ,much is required
of deeds,words,and love desired
my cup runneth over and I pour it in the reservoir of your soul
and as the poet asked, for whom the bells toll
you level your eyes and stare at me
with trembling lips utter"they toll for thee"

GRAINS OF SAND IN THE HOUR GLASS

There are just 365 days in a year you know
treasure each one down Life's path you go
8760 hours within this frame
so quickly they fly,it's a shame
525,600 minutes down the hour glass they fall
so enjoy each one before next year's call
and in parting remember these words of rhyme
there are lots of days, weeks, months, and years in time
many like grains of sand on the beach by the sea
washed away no longer to be
but gone from our memories they are not
time dies, but friends true never forgot
savor each minute of this year so new
and be happy in each and everything you do

THE WATERS EDGE

In the autuum I wandered upon the cliffs ledge
and gazed into the distance to the rocks by the waters edge
With uncertain steps I trod down the path that leads to the sea
where the crashing surf pounded the boulders and sent a chill through me
The placid waters that had been my life seemed so lonely and far away
down the sand I ran and ran till night disolved into day
The waves had died and a stillness enveloped my being
through the quiet and drifting fog I could not believe what I was seeing
Beneath the gulls where the limstone caves come into view
strode a misty figure that had to be you
The beguileing graceful gait of that someone who long ago
had disappeared was now running into the arms she used to know
As the clouds raced across the moon and the stars shined through space
I stood there in awe as I looked into your beautiful face
It was still there ,the lovely smile and that twinkle in your eye
and those lips that could never utter a lie
You held my hand and eased me towards the waters edge
then I saw a strange sight upon the cliffs by the rocky ledge
Someone calling out to me in a far away voice
do not go.do not go ,you still have a choice
If you go any farther than the waters edge I fear you may be lost
is the price you are going to pay really worth the cost
I struggled to break free from those lovely hands that held me
but I had waited to long, now I belong to you and the deep blue sea
As the waters engulfed us I saw one last glimpse of the sky
and thought about my life and whether I was going to die
Then suddenly you were there like you have always been
holding and caressing me though you knew my sin
The sea is still once more as we move away from the waters edge
and make our way home past the cliff by the rocky ledge

DESTINATION

Once upon a midnight moor while walking neath the moon
A voice whispered out to me,where are you going so soon
Do you have a place in mind, perhaps the village or the town
Are you taking the road over the hill or the one that goes down
The one that leads by the ocean where the rocks rise in the sea
Where we alone went, just my friend,my friend and me
Where we would stay in a world all our own
where time had no meaning and all our cares were gone
she is vanished now as quickly and quietly as the fog
that appears and disappears in this mysterious bog
where she went I know not though life lost it's meaning it did seem
I reflect back on it and ponder the question, was it real or just a dream
maybe it was just my imagination or like the games I played as a child
where you could be any thing you wanted to be,no matter how crazy or wild
so my friend I ask you which way are you going, which path will you take
the one over the hill or the one down by the sea, where my heart did break
who are you and what do you mean I demanded to know
I know where I am at and where I am going to go
what do you want whispering to me like this so late at night
where only the moon I have my path to light
I my friend he did reply am the face you see in the mirror when you do look
the reflection in the water down by the brook
I know all your thoughts and everthing you do
you see my friend I am really only you
the whispers that you heard were just the wind drifting in your mind
back to another place,another time
tryiny to capture what once might have been
if you had taken another road way back then
so I am glad you know which road you may take
the one over the hill and down by the lake
the one where a good friend does reside
where truth and goodness and beauty abide
where the flowers always bloom and the sky is forever blue
where all the dreams you've ever dreamed always come true

MY LITTLE ACORN

In our life we see and do many a thing
and share in the good times our friends bring
yet we have just so much time to do the things we want
and leave behind in the junkyard of life the things we don't
all the fears and the dreams that never came true
and it seemed to be so little time to spend with friend's like you
there is a finite time to the number of our heart beat
just so many days we are blessed by Sol's heat
so I will get to the heart of the matter of what I am saying to you
no not like crumbs to the birds
when you give of yourself as you do
but little morsels of goodness spread not to just a few
tis been said "the pen is mightier than the sword".
with more power than any warlord
so in closing I pen this to you and I mean it very much
thanks for being a friend, for spreading the sunshine for our soul to touch
I've always believed one smile.one word, one person, could a difference make
born of a tiny ripple into a mighty wake
you may never know all the good you've done
down the roadway of Life's long run
unless someone told you and I am telling you now like the tree with many a branch and bough
like the Oak that rises so tall
till one day the little acorn did fall
and you know what that seed turned into
so as your leaves blow in the frosty dew
I look up to the heavens and thank God for giving us a little Acorn like YOU!

THE SUNSHINE TRAIL

Come with me down the sunshine trail
Through the meadow, across the brook to the dale
Where the whippoorwill sings his love song every night
And the moon kisses the mountains till the dawns morning light
Where the flowers grow wild and free
And it's quiet and peaceful as the soft breezes caress the leaves on the cottonwood tree
And suddenly the years melt away
You are a kid once again and you have found a place to stay
Off go the shoes as you pull on your pigtail
And stick your toes in the dancing waters by the sunshine trail
Wondering how many raindrops or snowflakes did it take
to create this brook that journeys to the ocean's lake
counting the stars in the faraway sky
Gazing at the heavens and pondering why
Can't I just stay a kid again
And live here with the trees and the wind
Where the doe and her fawn graze in the distant light
And the bear and her cub feign a fight
And though I am alone I have a million friends
From all the stars in the sky to the foxes in their dens
Here I am a note in the chord of life
Amidst peace and harmony in a world without strife
Where I can sing my song and just be me
in a life without travail
Down by the brook, across the meadow by the sunshine trail.

MY FRIEND RICH

The measure of a man and his worth
Are oft times judged by money or status at birth
But if virtue were silver and goodness was gold
There walks a rich man among our fold
And if the thought was on whom could you depend
It would be this person, our Marine and our friend
So take your money, prestige and status; the race wouldn't be close
Let us salute and applaud this destined trove,Richard Campos
The fire that melts butter only tempers him
And his guiding light will never dim
Thanks for the rays of inspiration when the going got tough
No quartz, ruby. or dimond in the rough
But a real gem is a person I know
No pretense,bravado or show
A friend to Kings or a beggar in the ditch
Here's to a good human being,my friend Rich

THE ALPHABET

26 letters make up our alphabet I think
they are all important and to them a toast I drink
without them our written language would be in the tank
and the world would be cold, dark, and dank
I could never write;I love you
or look at those eyes so blue
or something I couldn't say to your face
because it might seem out of place
there would be no books full of reason and rhyme
and history as we know it would be a thousand years back in time
the holy Bible might never have been read
Tolstoy's War and Peace light never shed
Joyce's Ulysses just as dead
or Lincoln's famous quote
"The world will little note,
nor long remember what we say here
(words we hold so dear)
but it can never forget what they did here"
a poigant message that brings a tear
So I hold my glass high and toast a salute
and hope the point is well taken and won't be moot
"Here's to 26 little symbols that changed the world
from the foreboding rock of ignorance
into the shining wisdom of the Pearl

WELCOME TO MY WORDS

Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time

Is the opening line

In many a fairy tale rhyme

It speaks in a magical way

Of when the child had his way

Of Kings,Queens, and Princess galore

Fairies,witches,gremlins,goblins,

And oh so much more

A time of innocence and flowers

Of castles and towers

Rainbows in the day and stars in the night
Jack and Jill,Cinderella and Snow White

Little Red Riding Hood and The Little Red Hen
The Sun and the Wind

The Three Little Pigs and The Gingerbread Boy
Take me back to that joy

Peter Pan never wanted to grow up and I don't think he ever did

He never kept the child in him hid

He opened the jar and threw away the lid
So his dreams could fly like he

And that's what I want for you and me

Age is for old people

Ancient churches with their tall steeple
Redwood trees,rocks, and the like

You may dam the river with your dike

And turn the soil with your plow

You may steal my future and ridicule me now
Raise the bread with leaven

Build your towers to Heaven

That may be part of your schemes

But don't ever take my dreams

For my dreams are you

Past,present and new

Just like the fairy tale without reason or rhyme

May the child live forever

Once upon a time

As Long As I Am Singing

The road of Life is long and weary we always knew
But as long as I am singing I'll always be in love with you
Winding through the canyons of the long forgotten past
I see your face in memories that forever last
And the tears that I cried yesterday was for the song we knew
But as long as I am singing I'll always be in love with you
They can never take that away for it is laid in the cobble stones of my
mind
And the melody was you and there you will find
The love we once knew
As long as I am singing I'll always be in love with you

Just

you & me

Probably Never Will

I was born in Ireland way o'er the sea
A land of green that was home to me
When I think of her,it gives my heart a thrill
Will I ever return,I probably never will
The fishing village over the dale
When first I saw you at sunset's sail
You waved at me and smiled through the windblown chill
Will I ever see you again,I probably never will
Yet you were back the very next day
Though the words came hard,I just had to say
Oh lassie,oh lassie, never have I seen someone so fine
In the vineyard of Life will you share my wine
And as the sun kissed the top of the hill
I won't tell you what she told me and I probably never will
A hundred years have past
And the legacy holds fast
A newborn came into the world today
And the flowers smile on a grave down Killarny's way
Sometimes the sea is peaceful and still
And on living I've had my fill
But on dying I probably never will

Ocean Eyes

Somewhere between time and eternity
I feel you looking and longing for me
I search the seas and the skies
Unaware of ocean eyes
We met that day where the waves kiss the sand
'Neath the cliff where the gulls land
My heart was pounding like the surf when I first saw your eyes
Silence befell me and my face belies
My emotions which I hide
Till I kissed you in the crashing tide
You lay there in my arms that night
When I awoke you were nowhere in sight
A sense of despair swept over me
As I searched the shore and the sea
I knew the one love of my life had been taken I walk these shores sad and forsaken
Never to know she is out there waiting
My torment hating
As she calls me above the waves in the skies
With those lovely ocean eyes

Its A Small World

From far on high I see
The good Earth in all her glory
The Arabian Peninsula veiled in her mystery
The Suez Canal and the gateway to the Mediteranean Sea
The great continent of Africa with its diverging race
Looks beatiful from the eyes of space
And Afghanistan is to the far upper right
To many out of mind and out of sight
I pray the war will soon end there
Our soldiers get to come home by Christmas' chime
And the kids in Afghanistan make it through the winter time
And someday we will all hold hands be it summer, winter,or fall
And be one together for it's a small world after all

CAMELOT

Come with me to a magic land
Where there is gold in the rivers
And diamonds in the sand
With sapphire sky
And snow mountains high
There in the distance a village gleams
Waiting for us
A place of dreams
Whether we find it really matters not
For it resides in our heart
And there it will stay
Our own Camelot

I Have A Dream

As the day bids farwell to the golden sunbeams
My thoughts turn to you and enchanted dreams
To the land of rainbows and peaceful streams
I have a dream
With all my heart I deem
I walk and love with another
Just as much as my brother
And life is not worth living
If the taking exceeds the giving
And I know my journey through this world may take many shapes and forms
But I have a lasting belief that there has to be more rainbows than storms
And you will always be with me till the twilight's last gleam
I have a dream

THE LAST MILE

And now my love we must say goodby,
For the road I take you need wings to fly,
My sojourn took me to mountains high and valleys wide
Now I look forward to seeing the other side
But before I do,this I say to you
Thanks for walking with me when the sky was not always blue,
.
Maybe the road we took was less traveled and hardships lay ahead that we never knew
But I would walk a million more miles of it if I could walk it with you
We have come to where one road turns to two
I now must take one without you
Your road leads to roses and sunshine
So does mine
As I kiss you for the last time and go my way
Knowing the sun has set on my day
Peace and contentment enter my soul as I see your loving smile.
Thanks for going with me the last mile
A ROSE WALKED WITH ME

Carousel In The Sky

I have always loved the sound
Of the music on the merry-go-round
The many colorful horses that go up and down
You can have your night on the town
Just give us a merry-go-round
That's where I met you many long years ago On a playland steed at a carnival show
I caught you when you almost fell
Propped you back up on the moving carousel
Around and round we went laughing without a care
Months went by and I took a dare
Will you marry me I said
Trying to see your reaction over the horse's head
As long as we can go round and round
And the sound will always stay
Promise me this and I'm yours today
Were the words to me she did tell
On that magic night on the carousel
I sit here tonight missing her so
And there is just one thing I want her to know
And no one should have to ask me why
I can't wait till we are together again,
In that great Carousel in the sky

Coming Home

Sweetheart, this is my last cattle drive
I hope never again to see Abilene,Kansas
While I am alive
I write this letter while on the trail
Somewhere in Oklahoma Territory
We are stopped now because of the rain and hail
We lost old Jim today when the herd stampeded
I cry silently because he was like a Dad to me
He was always there when he was needed
We tried to give him a decent burial and said a few words
As we laid him down for his final rest
I put some wildflowers on his grave
And said "Jim this ain't Texas
And I know you deserve the best
You won't be here long
That coyote singing that mournful song
Tells me Jim,you are coming home
Honey,I'm starting on my letter again
It has been a week since we lost Jim
The wind blew so hard today
And the sky was full of dust
I don't know how we made our way
I sure miss you and the kids
I have lost track of the days
But I know this month Lily has her birthday
Tell her Daddy loves her and everything is going to be OK
I'll try to get her that doll in Abilene
It will be the prettiest thing she has ever seen
Tell Bobby I miss him a lot
And we will go fishing soon as this drive ends
To you all my love I send
A lonely cowboy on his last cattle drive
Never sent this letter and his sweetheart never knew what happened to him
He is out there on the lone prairie with his buddy Jim
Where the coyotes howl and the buffalo roam
Lily and Bobby cry at night
And his sweetheart weeps under the moon
He won't be coming back home

Red River Valley

Forgive me dear for all my transgressions and sins
I've wronged you but my love has no ends
They are hanging me tomorrow in Fargo I've heard
I'll never see another sunrise or hear the songbird
Like we used to when we first met
On the banks of the Red River, how could I ever forget
Time tarnished me and made me bad
I guess I forgot the love we once had
I wish so much I could turn back the hands of time
I wish so much I could read you those words of rhyme
When I penned I love you and thought it would always be
But I burnt our bridge of love and I will never be free
I hope someday you will find someone better than me
The river of love flows eternally to the sea
It has many a twist and turn
And too late the lesson I learn
I let you go and now I'm drowning
The sorrow of regret I'm downing
Unlike the sweet wine of our love
As I go I can only look above
And hope you and God forgives me
I'll always remember the springtime and the honey bee
The face of a beautiful woman that set me free
Bluebirds so many I could never tally
And the girl I loved by the Red River Valley
Good Bye Sweetheart

Columbia; A Fallen Star

January 16th,2003,they blasted off into space
February 1st 2003,in history they have earned a place
Rick Husband,Willie McCool,,Kalpana Chawla,Michael Anderson,Laurel Clark,Ilan Ramon,and David Brown
Lost their lives as Columbia crashed to the ground
A fallen star of many great missions it is gone for good
Not so the brave astronauts who flew on board
When Columbia became a fallen star they rose to new heights
They are part of the Eternal Heaven that knows neither days or nights
There they will shine for eons untold
For the weary and the bold
As beacons of inspiration,courage,and hope
Giving us the will to carry on and cope
Reminding us to reach for the stars no matter what the cost
For a life really worth living is never lost
They live on forever in our hearts and mind
Thank you, brave astronauts for forwarding human kind

Now They Are The Stars

Gone,Is That Too

I look back on the passions and pleasures of my life
The memories are still sharp and cut like a knife
The good things slipped through my hands like grains of sand
And were blown like the wind by forces I didn't understand
My first love happened when I was ten
When the world was innocent and there was no sin
She was brown skinned with a smile that lit up her face
I didn't know what people meant when they said she was of another race
That it wouldn't look good me holding her hand
Better if alone I would stand
So to fools I listened and lost my first love true
And the refrain was born that has haunted me my whole life through
" Gone,is that too"
God came into my life when I was flying on the wings of youth
He invited me to come and soar with him where I would know peace and truth
I did not want to follow into his sky
But chose to partake of the lie
That leads many astray
Into decadence and decay
I have found you once again
And realize my sin
He led me to you
Someone good and true
Now you lead me to him
When I stood on the periphery of the rim
I want to thank you with all my heart
For giving me a wonderful new start
And the lifelong refrain has died, thanks to you
"Gone,Is That Too'

This poem is dedicated to Bob McMillen who passed away in June,2003.He never got to enjoy his retirement that he so dreamed of.He always spoke of Montana, the Big Sky Country. That was where he longed to be.Now he is truly in the land of the Big Sky

Sometimes you wonder why God made certain people
Why a mountain has a spire or a church has a steeple
Maybe He made some of us just to take up space or be a fill in
Not so my friend,Bob McMillen
Bob loved life with enthusiasm and he let it show
He would always greet you with a smile and let you know
That he was happy to see you;he had that glow
He loved the great outdoors with a passion
A desire to travel and explore that never went out of fashion
The great state of Montana was where he longed to be
And I can still see Bob describing it with glee
He would talk about Glacier in the wild
Like he was seeing it through the eyes of a child
Or the land above Great Falls where the mighty Missouri is just a sliver
Or fly fishing on the Flathead river
The Big Sky country to the east
A land of superlatives to say the least
Bob dreamed of going there and he talked about it almost every day
Now suddenly he is gone and it seems like such an injustice,I have to say
He left us so quickly but I can't believe this is his final goodbye
I know if there is a God,he is in the land of the Big Sky
He is making people happy and he doesn't even have to try
That's just the way Bob was
A kind and gentle soul
A good man with a heart of gold
And I am richer for having known him,I am proud to say
I hope someday I will be by his side
In that great Sky Country on that eternal ride

Stanley,Idaho

There is a place you need to see,a place you need to go
Where the Salmon River flows and the Sawtooth's glow.Stanley,Idaho
Drop your cares for a week or a day
Come out west, you might want to stay
The people are friendly and the weather is divine
And in Stanley I saw a sign
Not by the roads that often wind
But a message of a different kind
It just came to me from my heart
Now I think I want to make a new start
Stanley,a land of extremes
Stanley,a land of dreams
A life I have spent on the roam
At long last
In Stanley I have found a home

Forever In Love

The seasons come and go and the stars keep their shine
Summer turns into autumn and the grapes yield their wine
As I sip their bounty and stare into the great above
One thing strikes me
I have always been in love
With you and with life and its glory
And the rose embodies my story
It may go away for a day
But in my heart it always stays
Like you, and that makes everything right
A life full of sunshine and starry nights
Hold this rose,letting go never
We will be together forever
Like the starry skies above
Me and you
Forever in Love

Immortality

Some of us live four score
Some of less, some of us more
But the years are finite, they do end
A baby dies at birth
An evil man never seems to leave the Earth
At some point we all go
The Whites,the Indians,the Blacks,the Eskimo
The Christians,Jews,Buddhist,Muslims and the Hindu
Their days are all numbered like me and you
Some of us believe we don't really live until we die
Others see the dichotomy and cry
Did my religion leave me behind
Or was I born blind
Is there equal justice for all
Or do many take the fall
I have found my way and I hope you have too
Love is God,and God loves you
All faiths, creeds, and religions with that theme
Will see immortality and it will not be a dream
My years are almost over
I hope soon to walk with all my brothers and sisters
In Eternal Fields of Clover

I Am Going To See My Mother When The Works All Done This Fall

I remember when I was kid growing up in Texas long ago
The only music you heard was the song
bird's melody or someone humming a tune you might know
We finally got this radio and it played all those sad old country songs
About how guys cheated on their wives and a millon other wrongs
Most of it didn't make much sense being eight years old and four and a half foot tall
But one poignant song did something to me; " I Am Going To See My Mother
When The Works All Done This Fall"
It spoke of a young man who left his home to work faraway
And longed to see his Mother everyday
The work was hard and the hours were long
And I think he must have wrote that song
He loved her so and he would heed no other call
"I'm going to see my Mother when the works all done this fall"
That cowboy died herding cattle on the range
And the coyotes mournful music never will change
To me that song was so sad and I couldn't imagine life without my Mother
A thosand years away and then another
Now she is gone and she is the lucky one it seems
I only have her in my dreams
She is up there in Heaven just waiting for my call
" I'm Going To See My Boy When The Works All Done This Fall".

To Old To Dream

I look and as far as I can see
Vanquished dreams I had for you and me
It is all gone now and I feel so alone and cold
And a storm is brewing I am told
I am so battle weary fighting all these years
I have run out of hope midst my fears
Today I stand here in total solitude
Resigned to this bittersweet mood
Maybe the winter of my heart will someday see a spring
And though I be old and withered maybe I can sing
'cause no matter how bad things may seem
I hope I never get to old to dream

Hands Of Time

I can change my words around and make them rhyme
But I can't undo the clock
I can't change the hands of time
I can only dream of having that power
But if I could
I would start right now, this very hour
I'd go back to the day I first met you
That summer day in sixty two
I'd give you that first kiss again
And say goodbye and follow the wind
Back to the time when I was a lad
And say hello one more time to my Dad
Give my Mom a hug and be on my way
Go back to World War Two
And see horrors like I never knew
Try to understand how that came to be
'Cause it seems like war is always part of our memory
Turn the clock back to World War One over in France
Where many a young man never had a chance
And the only marking of their losses
Is row upon row of white wooden crosses
Go back to Kitty Hawk in Nineteen hundred four
When men took to the sky
And on their own did fly
Stop and see the wagons heading west
One people's lives ending,a nation on an endless quest
The year was eighteen sixty four
A country embroiled in a civil war
I cried when Lincoln was shot
A great leader killed, but in vain he died not
His legacy lives on today
Sometimes history does show the way
In Eighteen thirty eight I observed the Trail of Tears
When the Cherokee Nation realized their worst fears
Torn from their homes and marched many a mile
Gone forever was their laughter and smile
To a land not their own
The eternal seeds of despair forever sown
At long last in my time travel I became weary
The sun didn't shine very bright and the days were dreary
I wanted to go back even though I would be old
The past I had bought but it was not all gold
Dreams can be bought but never sold
For time is an illusion I have long last learned
And the future is the only reality a fool ever discerned
We can't undo the past but our dreams in the future lie
Let the poets fiddle with their rhyme
Lets not turn back the hands of time

Elixir

Life is an elixir consumed at a pace
Cosmic medicine with a taste
Devoured by some as in a race
Drink it slow or drink it fast
There is only one thing certain
It will not last
At least not here
So have a beer or maybe a glass of wine
Pat a kid on the head
And watch the sunshine
Help an old lady across the street
Smile at the cop on the beat
Tell your wife or best friend you love them
If you are a lady say the same thing to him
It is only when we drink from the cup of kindness
We lose our blindness
It is only when we give our all
We answer the call
Someone is waiting to hear from you
It is all so plain don't you see
When we pass this cup to another will we be free
We leave this life having tasted the elixir sweet
Every day should be a treat
No matter if you drink it fast or slow
I just wanted you to know
Thanks for drinking it with me
Now I have to go
But before I do
I say this to you
I hold my cup high and salute my love
No words could be more true
The real elixir in my life was you

The One I Always Loved So True

I see a picture and it no longer includes you
The one I always loved so true
I see a picture and it is kind of hazy
Like the summer days on the beach when we were so lazy
And we had a million dollars worth of dreams
That came true only in other dreams it seems
I see a picture and you are not in it
Here alone with the sea I sit
And watch the waves crash at my feet
And remember how my heart used to beat
When you were by my side
I needed no wave to ride
It was more of a thrill holding your hand
And listening to that far off band
That was sweet music to my mind
Love's song could never have been so kind
And I know never again will I find
In the storybook we lived
And all that you gave
That missing page
That picture of you
The one I always loved so true
Gone like the receding tide
Only dreams now abide
I don't know if it is the salt of the sea or my tears I taste
But life without you is a waste
And I know not what to do
In a picture without you
The one I always loved so true

Mary

What can I say

She has been my life for ever and a day

I never knew what destiny meant

But I know now from God she was
sent

My life was was once with out meaning and dreary

Then I met Mary

The life we have had has not been without travail

But I would go down no other trail

Dying won't be so bad if I can be with her forever

They say true love you can not sever

We are old now and who knows the days that remain

But I can say she brought me more blue skies than rain

And I just wish her life had not seen so much pain

I'll always think of her for the love she had for others

For animals, all mankind, the world was her brothers

God Bless you Mary

My life was not dreary

Thank you for taking my hand

Soon we will be together a million years in the promised land

Dying won't be so bad

Coming Home

Sweetheart, this is my last cattle drive
I hope never again to see Abilene,Kansas
While I am alive
I write this letter while on the trail
Somewhere in Oklahoma Territory
We are stopped now because of the rain and hail
We lost old Jim today when the herd stampeded
I cry silently because he was like a Dad to me
He was always there when he was needed
We tried to give him a decent burial and said a few words
As we laid him down for his final rest
I put some wildflowers on his grave
And said "Jim this ain't Texas
And I know you deserve the best
You won't be here long
That coyote singing that mournful song
Tells me Jim,you are coming home
Honey,I'm starting on my letter again
It has been a week since we lost Jim
The wind blew so hard today
And the sky was full of dust
I don't know how we made our way
I sure miss you and the kids
I have lost track of the days
But I know this month Lily has her birthday
Tell her Daddy loves her and everything is going to be OK
I'll try to get her that doll in Abilene
It will be the prettiest thing she has ever seen
Tell Bobby I miss him a lot
And we will go fishing soon as this drive ends
To you all my love I send
A lonely cowboy on his last cattle drive
Never sent this letter and his sweetheart never knew what happened to
him
He is out there on the lone prairie with his buddy Jim
Where the coyotes howl and the buffalo roam
Lily and Bobby cry at night
And his sweetheart weeps under the moon
He won't be coming back home soon

Consider The Lilies

And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Matthew (ch. VII, v. 28-29)

The Earth spins through space
Each of us seek our place
Clothed in ambition and working to get ahead
Striving for riches and an ego to be fed
Off the crumbs of others dreams that are dead
Trampling the flowers before they could ever grow
You will get yours I want you to know
Remember that time
You could have gave a dime
And made a child smile
You forgot that
It has been awhile
Or that time you lied to your friend
How long has that been
How many times have you lied to yourself
Ask a fairy or elf
They are more likely to tell the truth
Or little baby Ruth
Who can not even talk
She just lies in her bed with a coo
Much more ahead of you
She has much building to do
But you have a lifetime to dismantle
The fire is as bright as a candle
And it flickers in the dying light
You can't see the lilies because of the night
The Rose you killed long ago
I don't know if you will ever know
What made the flowers grow
He looks in the mirror and it sears
Those must be someone's tears
But your time is ending
And I am sending you your clothes
I hope you are happy wearing those
To you Life was just a tease
Your raiment is all that is left of these
They will decay back into the Earth
And give birth
To the Lilies that please
"Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."

Loving You

To Marylou

I Love you in the springtime,in the month of May
I love you when the cold winter winds blow
I love you every day
I love you when I am angry and when I am sad
I love you when I am lost,I love you when I am bad
Our love was meant to be,it is simple as that I know
Destined by God,two seeds that grow
Many miles and worlds apart
One in a million
That we would be one heart
I love you when autumn leaves fall
I love you when summer makes its call
Each and every day through all the years
Through the laughter and the tears
It has been quite a journey
And only Time will tell when it is through
But it will never end
I will always be loving you

The Grass Can't Grow Without The Rain

The grass can't grow without the rain
It can only leave a desolate and barren plain
And I seem to find only hardship midst this pain
Why I am where I am
A lake without a dam
A river gone dry
Under a cloudless sky
Like yesterday's bones on some alkali flat
Dreams covered by sand
That is where I am at
But I will keep holding on
There is no place to go
And if I can't find rain
Maybe I can find snow
To cover the sorrow
Of yesterday's pain
And be on my way to some new tomorrow
Where I don't have to borrow
Memories from the past
My journey's end at last
Where I revel in a new rainbow land
Where there is much more water than sand
And it is no mirage I see
When I walk hand in hand with thee
What is your station in Life
Does happiness exceed strife
Are you on a desolate and barren plain
Remember
The grass can't grow without the rain

You Would Do That For Me

The night was dark and cold with a hard wind blowing
I was headed home when it started snowing
On a deserted city sidewalk I hurriedly walked
Trying to escape the memories that always talked
And stalked and filled my head
I stumbled over an old man who was cold as dead
Just lying there under the street lamp's glow
I started to keep walking but something made me stop
What,I will never know
"Mister, you are going to have to get out of this cold or you will die"
He looked up at me with his sad old eyes and started to cry
"I have no money,I have no place to go
My dreams are as gone as this windswept snow
Just leave me alone and let me do as I choose
I prefer death to living, what do I have to lose"
For some reason I started crying
To see this sad old man whose only dream left was dying
I tried to think of some encouraging word to say
But my life had been so cold and cynical no thought came my way
I was on my knees holding his hand
And I heard music as if from a band
A sweet melody from my childhood
Suddenly I was a child again and above me my mother stood
I was lying in bed,I had been sick for so long
To me she was an angel as she sang this song
"I love you my son and I always will
Whether you are awake or whether you are still
Time takes many things but it will never steal my love for you
For time cannot kill truth
And I will always love you true"
"Moma,I love you" I said
But am I ever going to get well
Will I ever get out of this bed
Will I ever walk again like other kids do
Or will I be a cripple my whole life through"
"Son I truly believe one day you will be like the others
Like your sisters and brothers
I pray that is God's will
That can you can climb every mountain and hill
That you grow up and have children of your own
And plant some of these seeds that others have sown
The seeds of goodness,love,and light
To brighten someone's weary night
And to show some lost soul the good light of day
To help others find the way
But son, I can promise you this much
As long as you need me,my hand and heart you will touch
I will never leave you until you can walk
Until you can run in the meadows, until you can climb the tree
Until you are free"
"Gosh Mom"I said through tears"you would do that for me"
"Yes,I would" she said with a smile
"I will be with you until that last mile
And be happy that I could
Now,you get well,is that understood"
Then suddenly the music and my mother was gone
There was just the two of us,me and the old man alone
"Let me be" he was saying in pain
As the snow turned to rain
"Leave me alone mister,I'm just a loser bum
When I am gone there is just one less piece of scum
And trash to pick off the street
Now beat it,get on your feet
Get the hell out of here
Go get a meal or a beer
What could my life possibly mean to you
It's over,it's through"
"No it is not" I said with a trembling voice
"You still have a choice
I am going to help you get on your feet
You will no longer sleep on the street
I know you are old but you still have some gold
We all have some light to give and some seeds to grow
I am going to take care of you mister
That I want you to know"
He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said "why"
I thought of my mother and choked back the will to cry
For the first time in a long time my spirit was free
"You would do that for me
You would do that for me"
"Yes I would"I said
I pray that it is God's will
That you can climb every mountain and hill
That you can still grow and have dreams of your own
And plant some of those seed that others have sown
The seeds of love,goodness,and light
To brighten someone's weary night
And to show some lost soul the good light of day
To help others find the way
And mister,I promise you this much
As long as you need me,my hand and heart you will touch
I will never leave you until you can get back on your feet
I promise you never again to sleep on the street
So relax mister you are now free"
He smiled as if he had just seen Heaven
And said" you would do that for me"
The next morning I awoke and he was dead
And though I grieved for the old man
I was thankful for the words I had said
He is in a better land running through the meadows and climbing the tree
As I see my mother smiling down on a little boy
"You would do that for me"

I Had A Dream Last Night

I had the most wonderful dream last night
We were all young again
Marylou was really a sight
Those brown eyes and that cute come on smile
If I had to jump,it would have been a mile
She was such a treasure to me
A sprit loving and free
With her I wish the sun would have never rose
With her time could have froze
I would have cared not
If the hours stayed forever ought
And my baby Marissa came into view
The sweetest girl I ever knew
So pretty and sweet
Life offered no better treat
Fill my treasure chest with love
And make my heart as the dove
Then Paul entered my life,my first son
His journey is over, his walk on Earth is done
But he was there last night
And I got to hug him once more before he took flight
Then there was baby Josh
Oh my gosh
Who looks like Paul
He said I am here for a season
And a reason
You won't understand it until the end
A message I send
It is just over the mountain and beyond the hill
And then I saw Bill
And my heart was filled with pride
I knew I had a dream to ride
This boy is really special with a mind of his own
He will till his own garden
Never mind the seeds you have sown
Just wait until he is grown
And then Brandon did appear
I couldn't hold back a tear
He reminded me so much of Josh and Paul
When he called me Papa
I was rich,I had it all
I was starting to get sad
Then I saw Brad
A talented and unique lad
I just laughed with joy
God,one more boy
He will claim his rightful place
Just give him space
I saw Mom and Dad
They were so young and happy
And I was so glad
To see them once more
They both waved as they closed the door
I saw Morylou's father and mother
I said thank you,for no other
Could have given me their daughter for a wife
To be happy the rest of our life
I saw all my brothers and their brides to be
Then I saw something that was perplexing to me
A chain of people holding hands as far as I could see
The young, the old, people of every race
A look of peace and contentment on their face
I pulled one aside and said" what does this mean
Such a sight I have never seen"
He spoke in a deep clear voice
"In this journey we call Life
We all have a choice
This chain of people represents everyone that has ever helped you
As to its actual length
I don't have a clue
Most of us take it all for granted you see
But if only one link in that chain had been broken
There would be no me
Or you,or hundreds of others today who are free
No one can imagine the importance of one good deed
The planting of one good seed
The creation of one good thought
Depletes the storehouse of lies the Devil has bought
I am glad you had a chance to see me in your dreams
Sometimes Life is not all it seems
Drop by again sometimes to see the happy days of old
And remember, turn your copper into gold
Greet each day with a resolute face
If you desire this place
And someday you can be a link
In that permanent chain of happiness
Where you know longer drink
From the cup of dreams in your mind
But a lasting and happy place you will find
For thousands like me and you
Where the dreams of Life
Really do come true"

Hi Amy

Thanks for dropping by
May you find a rainbow in every sky
May your fields always be green
Remember all the good you have seen
And at night when you look at all the stars in the abyss
Catch one for me,just in case I miss

Amy

Thanks for dropping by
May you always have a rainbow in your sky
May your fields always be green
Be thankful for all the good you have seen
And when you gaze into that great starfield at night
And see those million points of light
Stare in wonderment at that great abyss
Wish upon your star and say one for me
Just in case I miss
