August 2001 — Present: Owner, Kent Barber, P.E., Seattle, WA. Kent Barber, P.E. (KBPE) is a firm specializing in HVAC commissioning. Duties include business management, client account management, • project management, • specifications writing, • design intent & basis of design documentation, • design review, • construction review, • functional performance test writing & witnessing, and • systems performance troubleshooting, • systems manuals. KBPE emphasis is on long-term performance and maintainability of building systems, and building commissioning as a team effort. Project types: Correctional institutions, and public health offices and laboratories, schools.

2000 — 2001: Commissioning Project Manager, Casault Engineering, Seattle, WA. Commissioning project duties include: • client account management, • project management, • specifications writing, • design review, • construction review, • functional performance test writing & witnessing, and • systems performance troubleshooting. Project types: Correctional institutions, and public health offices and laboratories.

1997 — 2000: Senior Associate, Toombs & Associates Engineering Specialists, Inc., Seattle, WA. Served as Senior Associate and Northwest Manager for this Colorado based commissioning firm. Commissioning project duties included: • client account management, • building commissioning consulting, • mentoring of commissioning project engineers, • project management, • specifications writing, • design intent & basis of design documentation, • design review, • construction review, • functional performance test writing & witnessing, and • systems performance troubleshooting, • owner training, • developing O & M manuals, • writing systems operations manuals. Project types: Commissioning of Hospitals, gymnasiums, libraries, and central heating and cooling plants. Developing State of Idaho Commissioning Guidelines.

1994 — 1996: Project Manager, Field Engineering and Building Commissioning Group, Engineering Economics, Inc. (EEI), Lakewood CO and Seattle, WA. Helped to develop EEI's new "Field Engineering and Building Commissioning Group". Commissioning project duties included: • client account management, • HVAC systems field engineering and troubleshooting, • indoor air quality investigation, • project management, • specifications writing, • design review, • construction review, • functional performance test writing & witnessing, and • systems performance troubleshooting. Project types: Hospitals, industrial facilities and test buildings, research facilities, and central heating and cooling plants.

1990 — 1994: Senior Project Manager, Engineering Economics, Inc. (EEI), Seattle, WA. Duties included: • hiring, mentoring, management and review of technical staff, • client account management, • project management and engineering on new and retrofit design projects, • HVAC systems field engineering and troubleshooting, • indoor air quality investigation, and • mechanical systems assessment and master planning. Starting in 1992, with Phase 1 of the Fred Hutchinson South Lake Union Cancer Research Complex, began participating in building commissioning projects. Building commissioning duties included * project management, • specifications writing, • design review, • construction review, • functional performance test writing & witnessing, and • systems performance troubleshooting. Project types: Primarily hospitals and health care facilities; also research facilities, correctional institutions, industrial facilities and central heating and cooling plants.

1987 — 1990: Project Manager, Engineering Economics, Inc. (EEI), Golden, CO. Duties included: • project management and engineering on new and retrofit design projects, • HVAC systems field engineering and troubleshooting, • indoor air quality investigation, and • participation in mechanical systems assessment and master planning projects. Project types: Primarily hospitals and health care facilities; also correctional institutions, industrial facilities and central heating and cooling plants.

1984 — 1987: Project Engineer, McFall - Konkel & Kimball Consulting Engineers, Inc., Denver, CO. Duties included: • project engineering on new and retrofit design projects, • HVAC systems field engineering and troubleshooting.

1974 — 1984: Carpenter/Foreman, Various residential and commercial construction projects in California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado

Present: Vice President, Northwest Chapter, Building Commissioning Association (BCA)

1998 — 2001: Chairman, Building Commissioning Association’s (BCA) Attributes and Peer Review Committees

1998 — 2000: A founding member of the BCA Board of Directors

1999 — 2000: Developed (as part of a project at Toombs & Associates) the State of Idaho's guidelines for new building commissioning and retrocommissioning on State of Idaho projects.

1997 — 1998: One of six individuals to respond to the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance request to develop a professional association for building commissioning professionals. Served as chairman of the committees to develop the BCA's Essential Attributes of Building Commissioning, and the Peer Review Protocol.
