HEAR is in the process of being phased out in favor of the C-MED system. In the traditional HEAR system, ambulances open the squelch of a specific hospital's radio using DTMF tones. However, HEAR frequencies can also be used in conjunction with C-MED; an ambulance contacts a C-MED operator, who then patches in the hospital via a HEAR frequency. HEAR is a simplex system (that is, contact is made directly from mobile to base) and suffers in terms of range.
