Hernandez appeared to have settled in to an organizational fill-in role, but he ended up getting an unexpected amount of playing time at Hickory in 2002 when first the original backup and then Ryan Doumit got hurt. He hit surprisingly well after previously having shown nothing with the bat, but the awful plate discipline provided a warning sign. He ended up playing half the time again in 2003 when Travis Chapman struggled, and he slipped back to being a very weak hitter. He started off 2004 sharing the position at Lynchburg with Chapman and then became the regular, but he continued to do nothing at the plate. He eventually got hurt and missed the last couple months. He's an extremely slow runner but fairly good defensively. Even if he hit better, he's too old to be considered a prospect. He started 2005 back at Lynchburg, backing up Mike McCuistion.
