The Pirates signed Pena as a free agent. He's never shown any hitting ability above rookie ball and is strictly a veteran fill-in at this stage. He backed up a little at Hickory and Lynchburg in 2003, but spent much of the season injured. He returned in 2004 and was listed on the Lynchburg roster as a player/coach, but he ended up starting after Jose Hernandez got hurt. He didn't hit at all. Pena re-signed for 2005 and will no doubt fill in as needed in class A.
